I purchased this book for my 9 year old daughter, and it fast became one of her favourites. This book is very, very funny. It has everything you could want: a charming and engaging hero, a mum who just doesn't understand, smelly pirates and a really nasty aunt, who may just be a three hundred year old witch. The tale is engagingly told, with all characters being richly drawn - even the stange chip shop owner, Mr Pop who has a humdinger of a surprise up his sleeve.

This is a great book for those of us who still enjoy reading to our children, but be warned - if you put your all into it you will be sore voiced through piracy!

Our favourite bit was the pirates getting on the bus - hilarious.

I'm ashamed that I'd not heard of Mr D'Lacey before, but rest assured, we will be seeking out some of his other stuff (and possibly some throat lozenges).

I thought it was fun because it had lots of funny words and the pirates, especially Skuttle, made me laugh a lot. I think other children will enjoy reading it too.
