Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
It was like picking up some strange fruit that was black and glossy on the outside and biting into the flesh to find the taste was bitter beyond words. But she could not spit it out. She had to chew on that flesh and swallow every bit of the pulp.

When Rebecca's father is killed in a car accident, she finds that her loss is a completely life-changing experience. For the first time in her life she's in a situation that she can't escape from but has to work at and puzzle her own way through.

The business of Rebecca's teenage rebellion is stopped in its tracks by the tragedy and her subsequent discovery that her father had kept secrets from her. As she struggles to understand her emotions and finds new ways to look at the world, Rebecca slowly finds her way back to family and friendships.

Brian Keaney brilliantly captures the unreality of the accident's aftermath. Rebecca's isolation and alienation is almost unbearably realistic but the book isn't mawkish or overly dramatic. The dialogue feels very genuine and the characters are so believable that they almost feel familiar. A great, thought-provoking read.

Age 11 plus --Rachel Ediss

5.0 out of 5 stars i love this book, 21 Jan 2007
By S. Gaylard-hughes "Her Daughter" (UK, My Kitchen) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
i love this book and cannot for the life of me figure out why i hadn't reviewed it already. trust me, just read it and love it. i bought it kind of half-heartedly; i was looking for a reader i had never heard of to just test and see if i liked it (my english teacher told me to). so i did it and i'm so glad i did. i find it hard to imagine a male writer stepping into the shoes of femal character (as sexist as that may sound), partially from my own experience, trying to write in first person as the opposite sex. well mr keaney, you have proved me wrong. this was an excellent story and i recommend falling for joshua too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dis Book Rocks, 16 May 2002
I read this book because my school made me and i'm very VERY glad they did. Keaney is an amazing writer and i'd recommend any of his materials as they are so amazing and easy to relate to.
I find it wonderful how this man can create female characters so easily and make them so believable!!

4.0 out of 5 stars extremely well written, 27 Jan 2002
By A Customer
After Rebecca's dad tells her that she can't ever see her best friend, Zoë, again, she feels nothing but contempt for him. Why won't he understand? She tells him she hates him. These are the last words she will ever say to him.
Grief at her father's death is mixed with terrible guilt. While Rebecca is trying to deal with these powerful emotions, her brother comes home after leaving a cult he joined while at university, and he, Rebecca and their mother become the closest they have ever been.

Just when everything is starting to look better, she discovers that her father had an awful secret and suddenly her life seems unbearably complicated. But Rebecca must learn to deal with the truth.

The way Brian Keaney writes about the difficult situations Rebecca faces is brilliant. He describes her feelings and thought-processes well and you can relate to Rebecca and what she's going through.

I would recommend this book to other teenagers. It's probably more suited to girls but I imagine that boys would enjoy it, too
