Product Description

Review

"- '..a thoroughly fascinating read, but it is much more than that: it's an important book and one of the best travelogues I have read in years.' Sunday Times - 'The thing Rushby's book unobtrusively captures is its (India's) endless, dizzying fascination.' Daily Telegraph - 'Children of Kali - a fine of work, full of poetic moments, which can make one distinctly uncomfortable - is especially to be welcomed.' Literary Review

Sunday Times Culture Magazine, September 2002

'A remarkable book - part biography, part detective story, part social history...readable and at times rather profound.' --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kali's children-the thugs, 7 Sep 2003
By J. Smith "skypilot" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a very readable book and held my attention, although this may be because I have spent half of my life to date living in India. So as far as readability goes it is a good travel book, even with some less than elegant prose and a somewhat flat, unemotional style. However, there were some aspects that left me puzzled---when visiting a Bombay gangster called Gawli the author repeatedly refuses to drink the bottled fizzy drink hospitably provided by his host, making it into a rather childish contest of wills as far as he was concerned (by his own admission---curious or what!). This shows that his interest in India was confined to producing a book out of his visit, not in understanding the country; it is a poor country where a soft drink could cost a half a day's wages for the average man, hospitality is almost a religion, and it was providing a needless insult to reject the thoughtfully provided refreshment when, according to the author himself, the gangster was being courteous to him in every way. Why the author felt this way, then, is a mystery. Apart from this he never really gets under the skin of the people he meets, perhaps because he isn't very interested in them, and this shows. There is a curious lack of warmth towards everyone he meets, which is in sharp contrast to the superb travel writer William Dalrymple, who has written several books on his travels to India. The end of this book is something of an anti-climax.....nothing really happens and the author descends into some deep-sounding rather unoriginal philosophical musings about India in general. I congratulate him for his hardiness, however, as he does seem to have more or less cheerfully put up with quite a bit of hard living, which has probably done him a lot more good than any royalties from the book will ever do. In a way it is a pity that he chose to concentrate specifically on the subject of THUGS and THUGEE because many of the characters he met were themselves far more interesting and the book could well have come alive in a quite exceptional way if he had only chosen to investigate these characters more fully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as good as his other books - excellent, 22 Feb 2005
By A Customer
In my opinion Mr. Rushby is the greatest living travel writer!!

Having read his first three books several times I eagerly awaited this one. It did not disappoint. His mix of adventure, humour, characters, history along with his personal "inner" journey are presented in a wonderfully readable and intelligent style.

I find many travel writers boring after their first book. This guy never ceases to amaze me at the risks he takes in researching his story. You would have thought that he would learn his lesson! Thankfully he doesn't so his later books are as fresh as the first.
