Product Description

A rare snowstorm has enveloped Hillston, North Carolina, covering everything - including a shocking murder. Detective Justin Savile, the wayward son of Hillston's founding family, is expected to arrest the usual scapegoat but the boozy, charming Justin has never been good at doing the expected. Encouraged by his irrepressible partner Cuddy Mangum, Justin is asking dangerous questions in a town where family and money speak louder than justice and the truth. Led on by the visions of a beautiful psychic, his investigation starts to rattle all the wrong people. And as the local power brokers move in to shut him up, Justin must peel away the veneer of greed, hate and jealousy and confront the tangled past with the present truth - however unpalatable and dangerous that may turn out to be...

4.0 out of 5 stars Tarheels rule, 22 Feb 2003

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The book that introduced two of crime fiction's most memorable detectives, Cuddy Mangum and Justin Savile V, and the fictional North Carolina town of Hillston, is as wonderfully funny and enthralling as you'd expect. Only Malone can weave such wonderfully evoked tales, layered with humour, terror and rich humanity. Only a step down from the classic follow-up, 'Time's Witness' - as the writing lacks some of the tightness and most importantly it is narrated by Justin, and not the irresistible Cuddy.

Don't miss this classy series of novels, by an author who should write more, because I for one can't get enough, although each book stands as a wonderfully witty, compelling and moving journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality writing, 29 May 2009
By M. Ramsay (Johannesburg, South Africa) - See all my reviews

I bought this book based on the reviews of Malone's books on Amazon, not having heard of him before. Just read this one, but now have others on my shelf. For me the quality of the writing, the use of the English language, makes a book. It is this that sets apart writers such as Le Carre and Pat Conroy. And in the world of crime fiction, Thomas H Cook.
Malone is right up there, not quite a Thomas H Cook, but pretty close. And then add in the development of credible characters and an interesting story line and we have a book to be treasured.
