Product Description
Back in 1940s wartime Gloucestershire, a young GI stationed at the village of Tolland disappears and it is presumed that he has simply deserted. In his absence he is dishonourably discharged. Fifty years later a skeleton is unearthed bearing the GI's name on the dogtag buried beside it. In the search for his killer the fresh corpse of another victim is unearthed, yet it transpires that this was no innocent but a blackmailer - but of whom, and for what reason, is still a mystery. For the inhabitants of the peaceful village of Tolland it means the presence of police and reporters, unwelcome for those with long-kept and more recent secrets. Villagers struggle to live normally with a murderer in their midst and the police team assigned to the case of the murders has its own problems too - envy, ambition, obsession and internal politics all hinder progress until there is another death. Keith Tyrell, the fast-track DI does his best to get behind the skin of the village and its ways and very soon uncovers the killer of the GI. Although the murderer has been dead for many years the repercussions of that untimely death are still felt by some of the village's present-day inhabitants and when the identity of the blackmailer is eventually revealed unease still remains. Tolland is an old village and the lives of many of its inhabitants are closely woven. The disruption and mistrust the murders and subsequent police enquiry have brought to its midst means that life in Tolland has been changed forever.
