About the Author

Marilyn Jaye Lewis is an American writer of erotica who has for years run 'Marilyn's Room', on one of the US's most popular websites devoted to erotic writing and photography. She lives in New York.

As others have mentioned already, I too think that some of the lovely images are not all that erotic. That does not detract from the fact that there are some beautiful works of art in a wide range. A few males, but mainly females. Something for everyone. It is sexy and sensual, and occasionally erotic. Nothing offensive, but certainly "horny". It is a relatively "safe" book to leave out on the coffee table for visiting parents or prudes, but some of the pictures are bound to give them a healthy blush or make them fluster... *wink*

Everyone obviously has different views on what is and what is not erotic. For me, the images in this book are rarely erotic. It is full of fantastic nudes and perhaps I was expecting the wrong thing but I didn't find many of the images erotic.

A more appropriate title would have been "The Mammoth Book of Nudes" so that one doesn't buy it with wrong expectations. As photography, most of it was to my liking. But most images (not all) are of models' bodies or body parts with, in my opinion, little sexual expression. Besides, I don't find models obviously posing erotic. It's just not natural enough. For really natural, fun photos (but not necessarily erotic either), check out Diana Scheunemann's "Ambisexual".

Overall, the sexuality was far too subtle for me (and, no, I wasn't expecting porn). But the subtlety may well be to your liking.

Four hundred and eighty pages, seventy eight photographers with 6 or 7 photographs each. Each photographer has a few paragraphs of introduction and a small pic of themselves followed by examples of their work.
There should be something for everyone in this book. Personally, I would only class about half of the photos as "erotic". There is a fair amount of run of the mill nude portraiture, a smattering of bondage, enough stockings to placate the nylon enthusiast and some good old fashioned fetish imagery.
My personal faves would have to be Ben Westwood (see his self-titled book), Trevor Watson (see Cheek) and John Deitrich. Thanks to this book I have also been introduced to the stunning noir meets fetish glamour of Chas Ray Krider.
A bit too arty? Possibly. Not enough glamour? Certainly. But definitely worth owning as an introduction to some technically superb photographers. And who knows, you might discover a new favourite.
