Product Description

Synopsis

Portrait of Liverpool focuses on the city in its many facets. From the new developments of the Beetham Tower/Radison SAS Hotel and Duke Street Triangle to the less well-known monuments and architectural delights that even local people tend to miss, this is above all an affectionate portrait by a photographer who knows and loves his home town. It includes a section on 'hidden Liverpool' - photographs of the parts of Liverpool which are not normally accessible to the public - and a section devoted to past and present images of the Albert Docks and its modern development. In conjunction with the Liverpool Tourist Office and the Mersey partnership, this beautiful book also follows the city's Heritage Walk, and will include a map so people can walk the route in conjunction with the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liverpool City, 13 Dec 2004
A portrait of Liverpool is a book that shows Liverpool at its best. Its not just a photographic book but it is also an informative piece of work. Each of the images of which there are upwards of 130 (its a 144 page book but there are some double page spreads) are really superb in quality and as a Liverpudlian I thought that this was an ideal gift to send to my relatives who have moved from our city. I admit that there are images in this book which made me wonder whether they were actually Liverpool as I had never seen these parts in real life but sure enough I went out and had a look and yes they were there!! It just goes to show that even having lived in a city for 60 years now I can be shown new things about it. The synopsis of the book that Amazon have isnt quite right ( I dont know where they got the description) as there are no sections on hidden Liverpool or the Albert Dock per se and although there is a map it doesnt follow the heritage trail but the images of the Albert Dock especially the front cover is absolutely beautiful. The text is very informative (by Mike Mcnamee) approx an average of 50 words for each and it includes those little snippets of detail that makes you think - 'gosh so thats what that building is' or 'I didnt realise how big that is' etc. Paul McMullin has done a spendid job on the photography though I wish more had been put in on other buildings within the city centre (to be fair he does apologise for not covering everything). I was in Liverpool city shopping and came across Limited edition prints of some of the images from the book in a gallery and they are stunning in the quality that has been achieved. The foreward by Lord David Alton is also an enjoyable read.
All in all a great little coffee table book, a great gift or a treat for yourself - well worth the price, the authors should be commended!!
