Book Description
A superb book. It combines honesty, humour and inspiration to help people move ahead in life. Alan and Barbara Pease, Authors of Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps.
Powerful, simple and effective. A highly engaging and thought provoking book. Anyone who reads it is sure to look at themselves and the world differently as a result. Black and Bailey, Co-founders The Mind Gym.
S.U.M.O. stands for Shut Up, Move On. It's a phrase to say to ourselves (and sometimes others) when we are acting or thinking in a way that is hindering our ability to succeed. It does NOT necessarily mean get over it' or pull yourself together' (although there may be occasions when both responses are necessary). Shut Up' means stop what you're doing, take time out to reflect, let go of baggage and beliefs that hinder your potential. Move On' means tomorrow can be different from today, look for new possibilities, don't just think about it, take action.
There are six S.U.M.O. principles that are designed to help you create and enjoy a brilliant life. If you are wrestling with life's challenges, these principles will help you do so more successfully. 1. Change Your T-Shirt - take responsibility for your own life and don't be a victim. 2. Develop Fruity Thinking - when you change your thinking, you ultimately change your results. 3. Hippo Time is OK - understand how setbacks affect you and how to recover from them. 4. Remember the Beachball - increase your understanding and awareness of other people's world. This will help to bring about more successful relationships. 5. Learn Latin - change comes through action not intention. Overcome our tendency to put things off. 6. Ditch Doris Day - create your own future rather than leave it to chance. Forget the attitude "que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be." Make your time on this planet the best that it can be.
The S.U.M.O. guy is Paul McGee, an international speaker and author. He has been developing the S.U.M.O. principles over the last five years. Having spent two years on invalidity benefit in the early 90's, he feels passionate and privileged to share his ideas that help people of all ages and from all backgrounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin!, 28 Jul 2005
By Mr PD Sandham (Canterbury, Kent United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
How refreshing to read a 'motivational type' book that doesn't pretend that everything in the garden is rosey but one that takes an honest, humourous and practical look at how to get the most from our lives. The author's openess about his own everyday challenges gives the book an easy to identify with feel, whilst also providing some moments to pause and reflect. I have to say what drew to the book in the first place was it's title... superb!( For once I can read a book on the tube without feeling embarrassed by the title). In summary, it's readable, practical, realistic, humourous and inspirational...AND in the midst of the busy lives and hetic schedules that many of us lead, this won't take an age to read. I look forward to the next offering from the SUMO Guy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding out when to SUMO!, 13 Jun 2005
By Mrs. R. H. Gee (Warrington, Cheshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Paul McGee has an easy to read style which is both thought provoking and humourous. SUMO challenged me on both a personal and professional level. The final chapter encourages the reader to set their own personal goals and draws on the previous reading to enable it.
As a manager it helped me it consider how I respond to the challenges I face on a day-to-day level with the variety of people I work with.
I strongly recommend this to anyone as an entertaining guide on how to stay sane in the busyness of life today!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book with Practical Advice, 15 Jul 2005
By Rob Parker (Cheltenham, UK) - See all my reviews
I just wanted to congratulate you on your SUMO book. It was a great read and by far and away the best in the self help category that I have read recently.
I coach people for a living and read a lot of these types of books and believe that many fail because they are too abstract or too difficult to put into practice. Your book, however, is full of practical things you can do straight away to start to make a difference.
I particularly liked the 'Ditch Doris Day' chapter.
