Product Description

Product Description

"The BRF Advent book for 2007", with daily Bible reading, comment and point for prayer or reflection; follows the theme of beginnings and endings, traditionally linked to the Advent season. This book compares and contrasts the different Gospel narratives of Christ's coming. It is designed specifically for use in 2007, highlighting links to the Church calendar. Author is an authority in the area of liturgy, worship and spirituality, and has contributed to a number of books, as well as BRF's Guidelines notes. It is intended for those wanting daily Bible readings for Advent - especially from churches which follow the lectionary Regular BRF Advent book readers. It is aimed at those who know Maggi Dawn's name from her other writings. Advent links so many beginnings and endings. It is the end of awaiting the Messiah and yet only the beginning of his earthly life. It draws one Church year to a close and also holds within it the promise of another. In this book of daily "Bible readings for Advent and Christmas", Maggi Dawn draws together all four Gospel accounts of Christ's coming and sees Jesus as the pivotal person, the Alpha and Omega, in whom is found both the beginning and end of our salvation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Advent Devotional, 14 Feb 2008
By Dave P "Dave P" (Renton WA USA) - See all my reviews
This devotional takes the reader through Advent and Epiphany with thirty seven readings and meditations, working from the beginning to the end and back again. These devotions are a definite mental workout - no frothy, frou-frou theology here.

For example, from December 30th, "The Man Who is God", the author explores the perpetual conundrum of Jesus as both human and divine. I found the following excerpt particularly helpful:

"But sometimes the desire to find a logical answer to the puzzle of the human and divine nature of Christ has become so intense that the purpose of the incarnation - for God to make himself known to us in Christ - has got somewhat lost in the mix. Surely God did not send his Son in order that we should have more practice at logic problems but in order that we might have life."

For me, this gets to the heart of some of the great disputes in the church. There are those who do want the answer to all the logic puzzles, and will go to great lengths to "prove" that there are answers for everything.

Obviously this book is meant to be read through Advent and the Christmas season, and I thoroughly recommend picking up a copy for that purpose. But really, it's a pretty good read any time of the year when you might need thirty seven thought provoking and insightful devotions.
