Product Description

Product Description
We talk about 'solid ground', but in fact the earth beneath our feet is far from quiet. Over three thousand active volcanoes are scattered across the earth's surface. Some are in a state of semipermanent eruption, while others lie ominously silent for centuries or millennia. Our planet is rattled and shaken by half a million earthquakes every year. Many are so tiny that they are only detectable with scientific instruments, but others are vicious enough to flatten entire cities, with catastrophic results. Raging Planet is a gripping analysis of the global tectonic instability which puts every one of us at risk from some of Nature's most powerful forces.

About the Author
Bill McGuire completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in 1976 and a PhD in Volcanology in 1980. Since then he has worked on active volcanoes around the world. In 1996 he was a Senior Scientist at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory at the time of the first big eruption. Since July 1997, Bill has held the posts of Benfield Greig Professor of Geohazards and Director of the Benfield Greig Hazard Research Centre at University College, London. He is also a Council Member of the Geological Society and Secretary of the UK National Committee of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. He is the author of over 100 papers and books on the subject and a member of the Association of British Science Writers. Bill is a frequent contributor to radio and television, and his latest series, Disasters in Waiting was broadcast on Radio 4 during April and May 2000.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little gem of a book that caught my eye!, 29 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Have you ever imagined the intense power of volcanoes, the lethal strength of earthquakes and the destructive force of the earth, all crammed into one book; well this is it! When I first noticed this book, I wasn't really looking for any book in particular, it just caught my eye. I'd never really considered becoming interested in geology and I originally picked it up to see the pictures(they are amazing!) but I soon found myself totally engrossed in reading it! It's so easy to understand, without keeping the information too simple. I'm now training to become a volcanologist, and all because this little gem of a book caught my eye!
