3.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing for outdoor growers, 24 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This book was recommended by the Palm Centre in London, but I was disappointed with it. I felt the information on outdoor cultivation was a bit vague, and other than a couple of the 100 specimens where it specifically said the palms were frost hardy, it was difficult to identify what you might reasonably grow outdoors in the UK. Having said that, it is a comprehensive collection of photoes, and if you plan to grow palms in a conservatory, really highlights the range and beauty available.

3.0 out of 5 stars helpful up to a point., 2 Dec 2004
By A Customer
The book was recommended to me by The Palm Centre in Ham. If you're trying to "palm-spot", or identify plants for purchase then this book is helpful. It doesn't give out much information as to frost hardiness in the UK in particular. There are some nice photos and the barest of information on cultivation. Coming from a Brackenhurst College of Agriculture background I felt a little let down in my hunger for knowledge. As a relative beginner with palms I had read the book in a night and had to go out looking for further information. A pleasant and helpful book but with our winters a lot of relevant information was missing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not an Identifier!, 7 Feb 2008
I bought this book at the same time as Robert Lee Riffle's "Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms" and I agree with the previous reviewer that it is helpful up to a point. Martin Gibbon's book succeeds in giving a selection of the diversity of palms in cultivation around the world, together with some brief descriptive text and information on cultivation. The photographs unfortunately are rather small to do justice to their subjects and in most cases would not be of much help in identifying a plant.

Which brings me to my main criticism - the book is not an identifier and so is perhaps unfortunately named by the publisher. Young palms rarely display the species' mature characteristics and can be confusing to tell apart. I have a young Caryota which I was hoping this book may help me to identify, but I remain unsure whether it is C. urens or C. mitis.

Nevertheless this book is a useful and attractive introduction to the subject for those new to the exotic world of palms.
