4.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional destinations and spas, 25 Nov 2004
This is an achingly hip softback that works well on the coffee table or in the bath. It is packed with vibrant photography and a great range of 25 reassuringly expensive spas from around the world. With 11 of the spas in Europe the book is ideal for weekend breaks or even a day trip to Bordeaux and Budapest.

If you are thinking of staying longer, and want to play it safe the three USA destinations offer something for every taste: Miami Beach, the Colorado mountains or the Arizona desert. Whereas the spas in Australia, St. Lucia, India and Sri Lanka are featured for those who long for tranquility surrounded by tropical lushness.

My two favorite destinations out of the few we've tried are the Sanctuary Zara Spa in Jordan and the Hotel Gellert in Hungary. This book certainly has a feedback loop. Try one and you're hooked. But notice the emphasis is on destination and not treatment. In part this is due to local geography. In Iceland you expect to find lava pools, geothermal steam-baths and silica mud. Whereas in Jordan the treatments are ozone rich and mineral intensive with lots of bizarre floating. An index of treatments would have been useful and made this a 5 star book.

The other good news item is there are spas included, and clearly marked, that take children. Hence the entries work well for those with children and those that would rather not be at the same destination. And for anyone in great need for whom the thought of an airpot sends them reaching for the vodka bottle there is always the Somerset outpost of the fashionable Soho House club where indulgence is key.
