Product Description
Synopsis
Furniture designer Tom Dixon aims to extend the use of industrial design and how it can be adapted in the home. This book shows each room in the home in at least two different ways, with a "create the look" approach that shows how industrial design can bring with it an aesthetic of colour and fun as well as high quality. Key consumer concerns such as multi-functional design, recycling and an emphasis on mobility, are addressed throughout. A comprehensive sources section is designed to help the reader access the products shown, with products to suit all budgets.

1.0 out of 5 stars Trapped by a clever cover...obvious,obvious,obvious., 25 Jun 2001

This review is from: Rethink (Hardcover)
This book has been a real disappointment coming from the "Bolide" and "Chair S" designer, he who gave Habitat a twist and is one of the "Freeze Frame" pack. The cover is great as a semi-rethink and it looks good, so good that I ordered one without looking in. The beginning is dubious until you get to the photo of a woman reading, sitting in an overturned wheelbarrow, which is great. After this the least and less abusing word you can use is: obvious. He gives new use -rethink- to several industrial and sordid objects. What would you use a screen, a garment rail or a soap dispenser for? You would never guess. It should be obvious: as a screen, garment rail and soap dispenser!!! Did you ever figure what to do with all the wine corks and lose pieces of string pop(dad) keeps in the lower kitchen drawer (these are the most squalid pieces of home reuse items I can imagine). Tom Dixon has the answer! Have you ever thought about furnishing your living room (pad?) with breeze block and re-use tyre inner tube? Tom shows you how. Do you Know how Tom furnishes his office? With an Eames Aluminum Management chair, an oldish Mac computer and a desk constructed with "some" board and rethought, re-used telephone directories. Isn't it a lark!!! It would if this was supposed to be for fun but it is dead serious. For me it is unimaginative, sordid to say the least, no-think. Tom should have devoted some more rethinking time to put this together. He is a very good designer obviously not so good at books. The nearly underground Ton Dixon Architecture Design and Technology Press book was great but was about him, not authored by him.
