Amazon.co.uk Review
"Easy," says Terence Conran, "implies the psychological freedom of coming through the front door and experiencing the sensation of kicking off your shoes--even if only mentally." In
Easy Living, the founder of Habitat, the Conran Shop and the Design Museum offers a guide to creating a relaxing living environment which can be used as an antidote the stress and tension of modern life. His advice is to create spaces which offer the physical ease of simplicity, where practical tasks can be performed without frustration, fuss or muddle, where upkeep is straightforward and there is enough space and light to go around. So practical, in fact, is his approach that it's likely to offend designers who make a living out of over-elaborate decorating or New Age mumbo-jumbo. "Buildings live longer than people and often outlast their original function, which makes an excessively preservationist attitude something of a nonsense," he says in one chapter. "What constitutes bad feng shui is no less commonsensical," he claims in another. "Homes that are poorly serviced, in need of repair or badly maintained have bad feng shui, clutter clogging up cupboards, attics and lurking under the stairs is also unpropitious." His solutions are explained over 12 chapters dealing with light, colour and texture in various rooms. Kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and storage are dealt with separately in essays which reveal Conran's passion for interiors and the outdoors. Like many of his other books, photographs of interiors are juxtaposed with beautiful pictures of nature.
Easy Living is not only a stunning picture book, Conran offers sensible advice which will save many from making design faux-pas which result in gimmicky interiors which will date.
