Product Description

Product Description
Presented as a journal-cum-photo-album, Flavours of Africa is the first book to combine the thrill of the outdoors with the excitement of pan-African cooking. African food is bold and colourful, with rich, earthly textures and strong, spicy undertones. It is natural and honest, without pretence. Arab merchants, European colonists and Malay slaves have all influenced Africa's native cooking, resulting in a cuisine diverse and yet simple to prepare. Familiar ingredients: chicken, chillies, corn, couscous, fish, peanuts, plantain and potatoes, all widely available in today's supermarkets are combined in delicious and fun new ways.In the home kitchen this translates into ideas for all meal occasions: breakfast and brunch dishes, picnic and barbecue food, lunchbox ideas, soups, salads, snacks, party hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, plus breads, desserts and sweet baking.

About the Author
English-born Josie Stow was a private chef to the family of children's author Roald Dahl before moving to Africa to work for some of the continent's leading safari reserves, including Makalali and Tswalu Desert Reserve. Her innovative menus incorporate authentic recipes and ingredients from all over Africa, seasoned with Josie's unique sense of fun. Photographer Jan Baldwin has been a close friend of Josie since they worked together on the successful book Recipes from Gypsy House. Jan is one of Britain's leading food and interior photographers and her work appears regularly in World of Interiors, Harpers & Queen and leading national newspapers. She has travelled extensively throughout Africa and won awards for her landscape pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for reading and cooking from., 10 Jun 2006
By Gulfax (Glasgow) - See all my reviews
This review is from: African Kitchen (Paperback)
This book has loads of inventive recipes, mainly Southern African style but also from the North and Central Africa.

Although some of the recipes don't _quite_ work - the pineapple beer needs a lot longer to ferment than the time given - the book makes up the points for having beautiful photography and giving you the feel of being on safari in Africa.

Its worth buying if you're new to African cooking, but its also worth giving it a go if you already have a collection of African books. My mum's South African and my copy keeps mysteriously disappearing when she's visiting and then turning up in her bookcase!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Good Taste", 15 Nov 1999
By A Customer
"Many Cookbooks have the effect of sending you rushing into the kitchen to cook up a storm. A select few inspire you to rip out the photographs and frame them. And one in a million ignites deep passions and evokes an instant bout of incurable wonderlust. The African Kitchen is one of those rare gems that succeed on every level..." - Fiona Davern, Elle Decoration South Africa, Nov/Dec 1999

5.0 out of 5 stars "One of the world's most talented safari chefs", 15 Nov 1999
By A Customer
"Chef Josie Stow began her career cooking up treats for Roald Dahl - the twist in her tale is that she was lured to South Africa by one of his guests, and has been in love with the country ever since...." "The result is a journal photo album and recipe book which is the fruit of their 4,500km journey through the Kalahari Desert to five camps in four countries. Josie Stow & Jan Baldwin take their readers through a typical day in the life of a safari kitchen, from wake up calls to night caps..." Alasdair Riley - The Times Magazine 13/11/99
