Product Description

This book contains all teachers need for a snappy, interactive start to each lesson. Each starter activity consists of a simple effective activity involving minimal preparation, with answers and suggestions for differentiation. This book allows teachers to: target objectives that can be broken down into short, simple steps; introduce framework objectives in a clear and engaging manner; and cover framework requirements for each year group at Key Stage 3. This book can be used alongside the QCA Scheme of Work. The starters are all stand-alone and allow at-a-glance assessment by means of whole-class, interactive activities that take 10-15 minutes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant ICT starters for less than a fiver, 8 May 2003
By C Purvis (Braintree, Essex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I picked up this book whilst racking my brains for a starter and as if by magic my problems were solved. As a student teacher on my firsts KS3 placement I needed all the help I could get and this little book is a must for anyone qualified or not.
Fits in to the strategy perfectly and offers tips on differentiation for the more and less gifted children.

I might not know much about being a teacher just yet but what I do know is that this book is definitely worth its money. It won’t disappear into a filing cabinet or onto a shelf to be forgotten and you won’t find it in any second hand bookshop however buy this book and you may have to fight off the rest of your department from getting their grubby little hands on it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Assorted à-la-carte entrées - all at junk-food prices!, 17 Sep 2005
By Tony Seaton (Midlands) - See all my reviews
This book offers a wide range of ideas for starters, with tasters suited to students of differing ability levels and palettes, relevant to assorted sections of the curriculum menu. With a little imagination, the teacher can further blend these to suit the needs of a particular class, adding a topical flavour, or increasing the cross-curricular spread.

OK - a few of the ideas may be a little "cheesy" as another reviewer puts it - maybe the book only scores 8/10 here - but this has to be counter-balanced by the lean and fat-free book's wholesome value for money - scoring at least 12/10.

Leaving change from a fiver, this book represents excellent value, provides some good ideas, and should be allowed to kick-start the teacher's imagination. I have found it great for overcoming the occasional "mental block" when thinking how to spice-up ideas and get students thinking outside the box. It's also a splendid resource when you're covering a class for a colleague, you want to stick to something interesting and relevant, but you don't want to undermine the style in which the colleague has approached the material the students are already covering.

An essential ingredient for the resourceful teacher's briefcase, handbag, or lesson-planning folder.

3.0 out of 5 stars 101 Red Hot ICT Starters, 26 Jan 2004
As a trainee-Teacher of ICT, this book was recommended and, although the recommendee was raving about it, I was somewhat cooler! It has some good ideas, but I personally found many of them need a little extra work and some of them are just far too cheesy to bother with. That said, it's cheap and has its uses.
