A part of my personal art library for some time, this work was added because it filled in a number of important gaps in my then extant collection, most notably by introducing me to additional artists not featured in my other books. While the author chooses to adopt the route of concentrating commentary on a 'per painting' basis, necessarily favouring as a result intricate individual detail over the 'bigger picture' overview, the details contained therein are upon occasions little gems of information waiting to be uncovered, such as the story behind one of Anna Lea Merritt's paintings (I shall not spoil the plot here!). Oh, and for those who have not seen the picture in question (it was this book that first introduced me to it) I defy ANYONE to look at Charles Edward Hall�'s rendition of "Luna" without being UTTERLY mesmerised!

Covers the major Pre-Raphaelite artists, along with the competing Victorian Neoclassicists (who were not afraid or ashamed to steal some Pre-Raphaelite painting techniques for their own works!) and also covers some lesser known figures. It also provides a nice potted introduction to the glory that is John William Waterhouse, so be prepared to spend more money on a specialist book devoted to him after you have bought this, because you KNOW you will want to!

A brilliant yet simple introduction and reference to the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The detailed information given on the individual main works from the movement with insights into the artists lives. A basic history of the works and the leading figures in the movement.
