Product Description

Book Description
The Seed is an experience, an event, an epic adventure - the unfolding of a radical mythology: a sensual, fast-streaming ride charged with unforgettable beauty and violence. The story depicts a strange future where people have lost the ability to dream. But in this new Dark Age, a few have been born with the gift of dreams. With the ripening of adulthood, these beings take on the task of recounting their dreams. The most gifted of these people is the Dreamweaver. But when his dreams start becoming invaded by hostile forces, the whole new order comes under threat...

5.0 out of 5 stars Something very different, 28 Oct 2004
I agree with the previous person. I also got hold of this book in the States and read most of it on my way home. On the cover there is an endorsement by David Bowie, which reads in part... "De Angelis' prose is as vital, weird and as devious as his image-making...Enthralling!". And it is so appropriate that bowie is somehow connected to this book. As I read the amazing language of The Seed, I could see the alien figure of Ziggy belting out those mystical, spacey lyrics.

The San Francisco Times has credited this book with the birth of a new genre - what they have called 'Cyber Mythology' - and I think this sums things up. In many ways De Angelis is a modern-day alchemist using language and the rhythms of our technology culture to manifest forms that stay real in the unsolid zone of dreams and imagination.

I didn't enjoy all of The Seed, there were times when it made me feel uneasy, sections where I struggled to understand what exactly the characters were doing. Talis the sorceress changes 'like Bowie' into many forms, she is a vital goddess-like creature, then a lost alien unable to reconcile her existence in the hallucinogenic realm of The Seed. Here I became lost... But even when I was unsure of the journey De Angelis was leading me through, I remained captivated by the magical language.

The Seed is a book that I can see becoming a classic - it is unsure of what it is and yet it forces the reader to create in way that other books simple don't. In many ways we could be reading a futuristic book of spells, a matrix-like adventure and a real-time account channeled from a new dimension. I recommend this book because it is so incredibly different and so daring.

5.0 out of 5 stars words from a dream, 23 Oct 2004
It seems totally appropriate that David Bowie should be endorsing this book. At its best, The Seed conjures all the mystery and sensuous thrill of the icon Bowie at his best. The strange electrifying language that snakes through the book like the lyrics to some trans-dimensional song. The characters mystical movements through De Angelis's wondrous dreamscapes all smack of something dangerous but irresistible to the mind. This is the kind of work that would normally never see the light of day because it is so different, yet somehow it has slipped through and it's in the mainstream shops for us to buy. This is the kind of book that will either loose you or change you.

I purchased it whilst in LA on a gig and it changed the entire shape of my live act (I'm a Rap Artist & MC). De Angelis has managed to create something that has all the intrigue of magical incantations but glued together in a compelling narrative/adventure. A lot of people were talking about this book and I even read in the LA press that people were claiming it had heightened their senses.

Yes wild and weird, but all I can say is buy this book and find out for yourself. Read it through and then go back and pick out pages. You will find that each sentence has been beautifully crafted. This is gifted rap and experimental mix and a new form of storytelling.
