2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but filled with errors, 24 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This book covers a lot of ground, but it's very shallow. Boot seldom offers more than his own opinions on films (which are about as sophisticated as the average pub conversation) or irrelevant trivia (the records owned by the couple in *Death Line*, for instance). There are also *loads* of factual errors, right down to incorrect captions for stills (I know the two *Dr. Phibes* films tend to blur into one, but there's no excuse for mixing them up!). Although Boot goes into some interesting peripheral films, the book as a whole is pretty shabby. Save your money for Jonathan Rigby's brilliant *English Gothic*, which does all this much more fully and with higher production values.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overview of the British Horror Film, 10 Sep 2001
This is an enormously entertaining history of the British Horror film tracing it from it's beginnings in the 30s through to its heyday of the 60s and 70s. Refreshingly the book doesn't dwell on the terrific but rather over studied Hammer films. The chapters on Tigon and Amicus for example are illuminating - having known nothing at all about these studios.

5.0 out of 5 stars Illustrations worth the price alone, 28 Nov 2003
By bernie "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This is an overview of British horror films. Yet the subject is much wider than just horror; that is unless you consider “The Giant Behemoth” and “Fire Maidens From Outer Space” horror. In all there are approximately 400 films (an eight page Filmography) mentioned in this book.
It is well organized in like subject matter with several sections on Hammer films. It even comes with a warning that there is adult material; this is probably due to body and body parts being uncovered.
This is not just another pretty picture book as Andy Boot goes into many descriptive comparisons that go beyond the juicy facts.
