Product Description

Synopsis

This volume is one of a major series which describes the great maritime events of the pre-photographic era from contemporary paintings, prints, drawings, charts and plans. Based on the incomparable collections of the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, the project has involved selecting from over 66,000 prints and drawings and over 100,000 plans and charts. The variety of the material - from political prints to the sketchbooks of the seamen themselves - is incredible and the result is a sequence of volumes illustrating warships and naval warfare in rich and varied detail, with almost eyewitness drama and impact.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grand in scope, 12 Sep 2000
By Eric Husher "The Searat" (Portsmouth, RI United States) - See all my reviews
I found this to be a very useful book, covering a period not often discussed and less often portrayed in maritime history. Even better, Gardiner goes into many of the 'small' actions as well as the 'big' battles in brilliant detail, particularly the major efforts undertaken by the frigates of the Channel Fleet against the French. The contemporary artwork used to illustrate this book is also of high quality, although it would have been very beneficial if there were more (some!) in colour as well.
