Review

Acclaimed water gardening writer Philip Swindells brings more than thirty years experience to this definitive work on water gardens. Look no further for inspiration, advice and planting suggestions. Whether you have a town courtyard, a large country garden or, if you are very lucky, a natural stream, information on water design for all situations is contained here. Fabulously illustrated with water features of every shape, size, form and style, the choice is almost overwhelming. A formal pond punctuated by perfect plantings of irises, an informal wildlife pond teeming with native flora and fauna, rills, streams, water-falls, cascades, water meadows and bog gardens. The list is endless. Philip Swindells brings his unrivalled expertise to explain the methods of installation, the hard-landscaping, planting, stocking and aftercare. Handy hints on possible problems and how to overcome them together with how to rejuvenate an overgrown water feature are also included. A directory of plants from deep-water aquatics to marginals and tropicals for those fortunate enough to have a conservatory pond ensures perfect plant selection. The technicalities of siting and construction together with the installation of electrics are clearly explained to ensure perfect results. So if you are thinking of creating a water feature, look no further for a book to assist. Not only does inspiration jump from the pages but sound water gardening advice ensures a complete picture within one cover.

Water has featured prominently in garden designs for thousands of years and its appeal to the senses still attracts the imagination of gardeners. Although water gardening need not be time-consuming, costly or complicated, ponds and other water features do need careful planning. This updated edition of "The Master Book of the Water Garden" is a guide to this task, detailing the wide range of options available to a water gardener. The book is comprehensively written, with easy-to-follow, accessible advice, detailed instructions and step-by-step illustrations. The guide features more than 150 illustrated plant profiles, which detail the requirements for aquatic plants. Its clear advice should enable the reader to select not only plants but also fish for the water garden.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colourful, comprehensive and clear, 17 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Given that this book was written in 1997, the design element is fairly traditional rather than contemporary, but the plant profiles are comprehensive and nicely photographed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the only water garden book you'll need!, 14 Dec 2008
With its 320 pages and large A4 format, this book is chunky, packed and comprehensive. It starts with the history and principles of water gardening. Then an outline of various types of water garden, such as formal, informal, "water for wildlife", bog garden, water meadow and streamside gardens. It explains the essential requirements and consideration for each type. Sections on construction follow, explaining the merits of concrete, wood, pre-formed pools, pool liners, plus inheriting an existing pool. It also covers waterfalls, streams and fountains, plus bridges, walkways and islands, and sections on pumps and lighting. The plant and fish/animal directory is really comprehensive, at about 60 pages, and includes colour photos for each item. To finish the book off is a section on maintenance and trouble-shooting, including pests and diseases. If you start off knowing nothing at all, you'll find out everything you could need with this book.
