5.0 out of 5 stars Satire at its best..., 2 Oct 2009
By Mutt (Ankara, Turkey) - See all my reviews
Turkish socialist-satirist Aziz Nesin is brought to a wider international audience through this slim bilingual short story collection published in parallel Turkish and English translation by Damian Croft thanks to an extraordinary cooperative project between Haringey, Hackney and Islington Libraries Turkish Community Readers Development Project and Millet Publishing.

"Out of the Way! Socialism's Coming!" features an insightfully naïve young narrator whose hilarious misadventure in the world of Istanbul conmen gives a fascinating analysis of how socialism was both embraced and in so doing annihilated upon its inception in the Republic of Turkey.

"The Inspector's Coming" features a wonderfully incredulous narrator who guides the often equally incredulous reader through the ludicrous ins-and-outs of office life and confirms many of those long held suspicions about the Civil Servants who seem to make up the majority of Turkey's workforce.

"The Lunatics Break Loose" features a somewhat superfluous narrator, who is quickly lost as the tale rapidly progresses, who introduces a sneeringly brilliant analysis of the many revolutions that seem to have been enforced upon the Turkish people over the last century.

The controversial author, who was nearly burned to death by a rampaging mob in Sivas in 1993, is shown in just three short stories, which have left me desperate for more, to have been nothing short of a genius with an insightful wit which cuts like a scalpel through the flesh and exposes the corrupt and hypocritical heart of modern Turkish society in all its gory detail.

So now we can comfortably return to the asylum.
