Product Description

Synopsis
Modelled as a rediscovered ancient Chinese business text, this book comprises a series of instructional case studies which are set around the workings of a Chinese laundry and restaurant. The case studies are based on simple dualities, such as centralization/decentralization, managing people/managing results, and technology is wonderful/technology is useless. It is firmly grounded in business theory and practice, but is presented in a wry and lighthearted manner, and is aimed at middle and senior managers, students and those interested in business or lighthearted fiction.

From the Author
How to manage while keeping your sense of humo(u)r
We meant this to be a fun adventure in HOW TO MANAGE ORGANISATIONS, motivate people and make a quick buck: the eternal Z/Yen questions. As with many ancient questions, the answers have been locked away in obscure Eastern texts that have only recently re-emerged. At last, these excerpts from The Z/Yen Papers, modernised and re-published as Clean Business Cuisine, reveal to our age the one true path(s) to enlightenment. Today, with the benefit of these teachings, businesses everywhere will thrive and the course of history will be irrevocably improved.

Clean Business Cuisine is a uniquely enjoyable yet informative read, perfect for managers, students and anyone interested in enlightenment. The design of this book is stunning. The book lives happily in the home on bedside, coffee table or bookshelf. Kitchen and washroom are contra-indicated despite the title. Within the bookshop, the business, lifestyle, fiction and humour sections all have good Feng Shui, while the window display has the best energy of all.

Get a grip on the eternal big picture details - and we hope you have a good laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very imaginative, destined to be a classic., 7 Aug 2000
By A Customer
I read a stunning review in the Sunday Times (book of the Week) recently of this book so I thought I would buy it. As it happens, I enjoyed it immensely ,laughed a lot, and read it in one day. The Sunday Times were spot on. I found it to be funny and clever , a light read, but with enough substance to return to it several times.I recognised many of the business dilemnas and situations presented in the book in my workplace . It is also beautifully bound (a bit designer)and I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a good book for themselves or to buy as a present.

This is the sort of book I wish more people would use for executive coaching. Each chapter is a little, stand-alone jewel. I loved each one and handed some of them on to colleagues. A real treasure. When can they do the sequel?

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Sour Business Management, 2 Aug 2001
By Sulis (Bath, UK) - See all my reviews
Not since 'Parkinson's Law' has a business book managed to make important but unpalatable truths so easy to swallow.

Mainelli and Harris have used their obvious experience in the human issues that decide how most of us make business decisions - greed, fear, lust, stupidity, etc. - and have served them back to us in the ongoing saga of Chao Kli Ning as he struggles to turn his Tang Dynasty Chinese restaurant and laundry into the next Microsoft.

In each episode Chao eagerly jumps onto a new management theory bandwagon - re-engineering, continuous improvement, etc. - only to fall to earth sadder and (a bit) wiser. Of course that's never happened to US, has it? We can laugh at his misfortunes (the book is very funny, with no gag considered too cheap) while recognising the seductive power of anything that promises to give us a competitive edge.

The morals that accompany each episode illustrate that the Ying of new theory/technology has to be balanced by the Yang of experience and common sense.

They've obviously had a great time writing it - you'll have fun reading it (and giving it to those who haven't 'got a detailed grasp of the big picture'). Half an hour after finishing it you'll be looking forward to the sequel.
