Product Description

Product Description
This book features quirky, enjoyable and entirely true instances of science going wrong, right and in totally unexpected directions from 600 BC onwards...Just how did the scientific discoveries that have changed our world come about? Surendra Verma investigates the eureka moments, the serendipities and the plain errors that have peppered science's last 2,000 years. The result is a wonderfully readable insight into the mysteries of human scientific endeavour. From the sixth century BC and Pythagoras' claims that the world was round, to the modern discovery of penicillin, Surendra Verma trawls through history in search of the more human side of science. Who discovered anaesthesia at a party? How did a sewage farm odour reducer benefit medicine? Why did the Cold War prevent the West understanding heart disease? Verma's account of philosophers, physicians, scientists and Nobel Prize winners is a highly informative and brilliantly light-hearted account of how often Lady Luck can play a part in the scientific process.

About the Author
Is a science journalist based in Melbourne, Australia. He is the author of The Mystery of the Tunguska Fireball (Icon, 2005) and The Little Book of Scientific Principles, Theories & Things (New Holland, 2006).

5.0 out of 5 stars In response to Abrahim Ali's commnets, 5 Dec 2007
Perhaps Mr Ali would care to read professional reviews of the book, for example, New Scientist's 11 August 2007 review:

'SURENDRA Verma assembles a punchy list of scientific breakthroughs and blunders, from ancient Egypt through to today's news. Some entries, such as his concise explanation of the Moho boundary in seismology and its importance in understanding Earth's structure, are golden nuggets. At other times, he opts for a silly story over a clear explanation of the phenomenon. The "one page, one discovery" format makes this a book no one is likely to read from cover to cover, but it is one you can open at any point -and be likely to learn something.'

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid, 2 Dec 2007
This hardly a book, just a random collection of facts most of which are well known and the rest tend to be uninteresting. Having bought this book being rather impressed at the author's skill in choosing a title I leave it being rather shocked at his gall calling this a book. This reads almost like a timeline plagiarised from the internet. There's absolutely no analysis here and little explanation.
