Product Description

Product Description
This text begins by explaining how philosophers like Socrates and Pythagoras influenced Plato's thought. It provides a clear account of Plato's puzzling theory of knowledge, and explains how this theory then directed his provocative views on politics, ethics and individual liberty. It offers detailed critical commentaries on all of the key doctrines of Platonism, especially the very odd "theory of forms", and concludes by revealing how Plato's philosophy stimulated the work of important modern thinkers such as Karl Popper, Martha Nussbaum and Jacques Derrida. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author
Dave Jones has taught philosophy to students for many years. He has recently written and illustrated Leading Questions, a book about postmodernist literary theory. He is also the author of Introducing Ethics and Descartes.

Judy Groves is an artist, illustrator and designer. She has also illustrated introductory guides to Jesus, Wittgenstein, Lacan, Chomsky and Lévi-Strauss in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Introducing Plato, 22 Mar 2003
By Michael Fingal O'Flaherty Brett (North London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I have bought dozens of copies of this book! I teach Plato to groups of 12 year old children, as part of a programme for raising the quality of discussion in our school, for all children-not just the brightest.(Two of these were the youngest ever candidates to pass A/s level Philosophy- much of this I attribute to this wonderful book.)

It is an excellent introduction to Plato's work and ideas and explains them in an attractive and interesting way using cartoons and concise-easy to understand- explanations.

I have learned a great deal from it. All the essentials are there, and provide a wonderful way in to reading texts like 'The Republic.' I would recommend it to anyone who would like to have a closer look at Plato, or Classical Greek Philosophy in general.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 12 Dec 2004
By Wily Manc "WM" (Manchester, Greater Manchester, GB) - See all my reviews
Just to put my review in context, I read this book knowing absolutely nothing about Plato. But then I'm not sure I know that much now. I love Icon Books' Introducing ... series, and I've been enthralled and educated by all of them. And although this book constantly refers to Plato as the greatest philosopher in history I don't think it really explains why.

Plato's style of writing is made clear throughout the book, and some of his principles are expounded quite clearly but I couldn't help but feel that the writer hammered at these points a little unnecessarily without going into what Plato's legacy actually is.

I didn't think as much of the artwork as I usually do with these books. It was centred around two random characters wandering through the pages commenting on the matters discussed. Maybe it's just me but it seemed a little unimaginative.
