Review

'FLYING CONCORDE is written in a manner which gives anyone who knows the author as well as I do a feeling of talking to him in person. He knows the aeroplane, and he writes about it in such a way that even the most technical aspects can be readily understood. It is a delight to read. The story of Concorde is a large subject, concerning as it does both the technical history of the aircraft and its struggle to be accepted as an airliner. I am sure that those who read this book will enjoy it as much as I have.' Brian Trubshaw, Chief Test Pilot

Product Description

This new edition of "Flying Concorde" has an added section that covers the cause of the Paris tragedy and the remedies and improvements that have been made in the light of the accident report. It also brings the reader up to date with many other improvements that have been made to the aeroplane that will keep it in service for many years to come. During Concorde's entry into service with British Airways, Brian Calvert was flight manager (technical) and responsible for deciding the methods by which Concorde would be flown, the flying qualities of the aircraft and its suitability for potential routes. He carried out acceptance trials and flew several of its inaugural flights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise and Inspiring. A Great Book and Manual., 30 Nov 2000
By warren.pryde@sympatico.ca (Hamilton, Ontario, CANADA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flying Concorde (Paperback)
Flying Concorde by Brian Calvert inspired me to attain my private pilots license and developed my fascination with this wonderful marvel of aviation and human acheivement.

Captain Calvert has put together a "manual" which is easy for someone without any knowledge of aviation principles to easily and quickly understand the marvels of flight, while being of stimulating interest to even a licensed pilot.

Flying Concorde, is one of those rare books that having been in my possession for over ten years now, still encourages me to read through it on occasion to experience the vicarious excitement of both "flying" this beautiful bird, and to share in the trials of her acceptance in society on both sides of the Atlantic.

If you have always wanted to know about Concorde, and even fly her, be sure to read this fabulous book!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent description of flying Concorde + its early days, 16 Feb 2005
By Mr. Clg Bell "Christopher Bell" (Tiverton, Devon) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is well written and describes Concorde's early development and flight testing in a clear and easily understood style. It contains sufficient technical detail to understand what is involved without becoming overly complicated.

The sections on the tortuous negotiations required to get clearance for Concorde to fly to JFK airport make especially fascinating reading, and give a clear dsecription of the technical solutions and political horse-trading that were required.

It also describes, from the point of view of an airline pilot, exactly what was involved in making a typical Concorde flight; giving a vivid feel for the level of skill and dedication required.

Well worth reading, and an ideal companion to Christopher Orlebar's "official" book on Concorde.
