5.0 out of 5 stars Useful for a little more technmical depth, 30 May 2002
I bough this book in conjunction with Steve Longland's Gliding book. I find the two books a very useful pair of books. I tend to use the Gliding book to gain an overview and then refer to the Glider Pilot's Manual when I want to understand more of the technical background to the subject. The Glider Pilot's Manual however also covers the basic information as well as providing the technical depth.

I think that if I could only buy one book then it would be the Glider Pilots Manual. If however you can stretch to two books then this and the Steve Longland book do make a very good combination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy just one book - this one, 21 Nov 2003
By A Customer
As an overly curious novice pilot I've had a look at many books and have bought three.
If you seriously intend to get airborne, buy this one for all the information you really need to know and the clear schematics. Piggot's books are fine and easily accessible, but the drawings are less informative and the publisher tends to recycle chapters by shuffling the same material over several books.
Happy soaring.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book I recommend to my students, 6 April 2005
I believe that this is the best textbook available for trainee (and early solo) glider pilots. I find it more readable and more up-to-date than the numerous books by a famous (but elderly) gliding instructor. Its the one book that (as an BGA Assistant Gliding Instructor and Nationals comp pilot) I recommend to all my students, as a way to pre-brief themselves on the next exercises in the syllabus, and also to revise after having carried out the flying exercises. I personally found that this approach (albeit using books by the other author) significantly speeded up my gliding training and helped me get ready for solo after only 30 flights. In fact, I liked the book so much that I bought myself a copy.
