Product Description

This reference records the historical details of the RAF's basic fighting formations - its squadrons. 12 appendices serve as a reference point, with two of them, one keyed by aircraft type, the other by location, providing cross-references to the listing of each squadron's movements and equipment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Research Document - easy to use, 16 Aug 2001

(REAL NAME)
A comprehensive book giving dates, locations and aircraft for every squadron in the Royal Air Force. The book includes photographs of aircraft and maps to show locations of all RAF airfields. Probably the best RAF research document in publication

5.0 out of 5 stars First class reference for Squadrons, locations and equipment, 3 Aug 2001
As a serving officer with much experience, Jefford knew his subject and spent many years in private research of the official records. The result of his careful labour is this remarkable and utterly comprehensive account of RAF Squadrons, their locations, their aircraft and much valuable background besides. Dispassionately summarising his own work as a compilation (rather than writing) and "for reference, not for reading", Jefford is equally dispassionate in his caution over the state of the source material which he so meticulously researched in the PRO and Air Historical Branch. The difficulties of serving officers in the field and the more mundane vagaries of peacetime record keeping are faced squarely and fairly. When Jefford errs, it is with good reason, in the context of an affordable and accessible work. Unlikely to be contradicted, and then only by the personal records of participants, this book can hardly be bettered.
