From the Author
Outline of the bookThis book is of interest to historians of aviation, glider pilots and the builders of scale model sailplanes, especially those of American design.
The three Schweizer brothers, Ernie, Paul A and William, began building gliders in 1931. The Schweizer Aircraft Company became established at Elmira, New York State. It remains there today as the only aircraft manufacturing firm which, over such a long period, has remained continuously in the ownership and control of a single family.
Every sailplane type designed and built by the Schweizers is described, with an accurate scale drawing based on workshop plans, many photographs, technical details and a text written by Paul A Schweizer himself, explaining the background, aerodynamic and structural decisions leading to its particular features, and production figures.
The final decision to cease glider production after 1987 is explained. The Schweizer Company now builds mostly helicopters and quiet surveillance aircraft, these being partly based on sailplane technology.
