This is a fascinating collection of black and white photographs with an important historical context, charting the history of the Scottish mining industry.

The detail is not always comprehensive, since miners tended to be poor, and rarely owned cameras, but as a factual and nostalgic collection of photographs it is valuable, and becomes even more so when one considers the destruction of the British mining industry overall. Seeing the happy faces of the mining families saddened me, when I stopped to ponder the obliteration of their very livelihoods. 'Mining The Lothians' is sad evidence of what modernisation has done to British industry.
