'Gripping and superbly read by Andrew Lincoln this is a real treat' Ad Lib

Review
Praise for Julian Stockwin’s previous books: ‘I was soon turning over the pages almost indecently fast ... Roll on, the promised adventures of Kydd and Renzi.’ (Independent )

‘The vantage point of the common sailor gives the nautical novel a fresh twist. In Stockwin’s hands the sea story will continue to entrance readers across the world.’ (Guardian )

‘Gripping ... Rich in action and full of interesting characters, this thrilling novel leaves you in awe of the 18th-century seaman.’ (Peterborough Evening Telegraph )

'Stockwin paints a vivid picture of life aboard the mighty ship-of-the-line . . . The harsh naval discipline, the rancid food, and the skill of the common sailor are all skilfully evoked.' - Daily Express --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sunflower - Review, 19 May 2003
By Paul Rezon (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Seaflower (Kydd 2) (Hardcover)
This book grabs and transports you back to the Caribbean from the start!
I have really enjoyed Julian Stockwells books so far and this on for me is the best by far.
I felt as though I was there in the heart of a sea skirmish, was there in the heat of the Caribbean sun and could feel the trade winds in my face able to smell the ocean and spices.

I cant wait for the next book to be written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets better with each book., 18 Feb 2005

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Seaflower (Kydd 2) (Paperback)
This is a detailed account of shipboard life in the late 18thC from the foremast Jack's perspective:- cramped conditions, disgusting food, undeserved punishment and unremitting toil. Sensitive writing and deft plot handling continue the good work started in 'Kydd' and Artemis'.
But, where 'Artemis' seemed to be a vehicle for establishing Kydd's commitment to the sea and his improvement in both nautical and social niceties, 'Seaflower' is packed with action on both land and sea.
In almost every sort of boat under every sort of captain, Kydd and Renzi suffer the highs and lows of life in the Caribbean - hurricanes, disease, self-loathing and shipwreck, as well as friendship, family, promotion and self-esteem.

Mr. Stockwin gets better with each book, his sea-knowledge comes across loud and clear. Combined with his personal research into the locations produces a highly-believable account of little-known events in the most volatile period in British naval history. There follows a taster of the next book 'Mutiny', and, as we have come to expect in this genre, a historical note outlining the facts behind the fiction.

As good as it gets.

5.0 out of 5 stars A seaworthy tale, 4 April 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Seaflower (Kydd 2) (Hardcover)
.... Stockwin's style has already progressed - even mellowed - there is a contentment that the reader has with the main character, his situations and interactions with other characters. Also impressive is the way the story unfolds, this isn't cut and thrust boys own adventures, Kydd's adventures are new millennium stories for boys and girls (especially those over 30 yearts of age). Stockwin has found a new voice in an old genre; akin to Clint Eastwood and his very different stances on the Western! I like Kydd. I like Stockwin. I believe these books can also teach children - especially teenagers - something about history and that is very important. It is clear that Stockwin loves the sea, it is in his blood, unlike Forester who never sailed in his life. I give five stars and cringe, because what book is worth five stars nowadays? Read this one and find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of excitement in this book!
Book three in the Kydd series (see my reviews of _Kydd: a Novel_ and Artemis) is very good. Kydd is slowly climbing the ladder, but sometimes falls a few rungs first. Read more
