Product Description

Product Description

'In order to test a wooden boat's soundness, you stab it with a bradawl. Forty stabs later, Magdalen looked like a colander. It was possible to read a paperback under her upturned hull without artificial light.' Sam Llewellyn is attempting to make his way from the depths of Wales to far-off London. In a rowing boat. Courageously facing the perils of the British canals, Sam and his recently repaired craft venture forth into the wettest October on record. This hilarious account of problematic weirs, eccentric anglers, and Sam's mysterious blue skin condition contains surprises and laughs aplenty as man and boat try to complete their epic month-long rowing odyssey.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best travel book I have ever read, 12 Nov 2003
A really special account of a journey by (somewhat weathered) rowing boat through the Midlands to London. It's full of dead-pan humour and interesting interactions between the weary traveller, fishermen, boat people, and lock keepers - as well as some hilarious encounters with gale force winds, dangerous bushes, malevolent sardines, and blue groundsheets. Llewellyn's adventurous ordeal makes Michael Palin's journey around the world look like a stark and clinically uneventful daytrip to Swindon. How I laughed as I lay in bed chewing my Remegel tablets. (They're chewy, not chalky).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read, 17 Mar 2005

I first read this book from my local library when it originally came out. Having bought and re-read this edition I remembered how much I had enjoyed it twenty years before. Whilst not a "fall out of bed laughing helplessly" Bill Bryson type book it certainly has plenty to smile about. The style is easy on the brain and the author really makes you feel as if you are sitting in his rowing boat alongside him. A great read.
