5.0 out of 5 stars A laugh-out-loud, page-turner of a blokey boaty book, 11 Jul 2002
By Toby Champion "tobych" (Poulsbo, WA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I loved this book! It's a real page turner, and made me laugh out loud a lot. Actually I read the last few chapters when I was quite drunk, which helped get into the general swing of things. Last night I was crumpled up on the sofa, shaking my head saying "No, no, no!" when reading the bit about the tunnel and the church and the film director. I love the writing style. It did seemed to change a bit over the course of the book and after a few chapters became less affected and more natural and zippy. That may just be the reader getting into the book though. I started Blue Road only the day after finishing "Three Men in a Boat"; the continuity of style was an odd experience, especially when the content of yours got a tad more outlandish than Jerome K. Jerome's. I was touched by the author's blokeish, heartfelt appreciation of the South Pacific islands, and his rant about how the islanders were treated during the second world war. I imagine it's pretty unusual to have someone who's been through all that *and* and can write *and* appreciates the beauty of nature and other people's cultures *and* is meticulous enough to be able to pull it all off without the book failing to protect the, um, innocent, what with all that tweaking of stories and name changes.

5.0 out of 5 stars How come this isn't a famous book?!, 20 Dec 2005
By A Customer
I read a lot of humorous literature and I have to say without exaggeration that this has got to be the funniest new writer of the century and the first writer for a long time to show genuine ability to rival a Clive James or a Jerome K Jerome (clearly an influence).

If this book doesn't make you laugh out loud, you need a humour transplant!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hilarious, Frightening World of Merchant Seamen!, 2 Sep 2002
This book is devastatingly funny! I have never read a book so fast, and once finished I was immediately re-reading my favourite parts. I can certainly tell you that spontaneous convulsions, punctuated with smirks and snorts & interspersed with bouts of drooling is one way to get 6 train seats to yourself.

"Blue Road" describes a hilarious and sometimes frightening journey through the surreal world of a bunch of cynical, reprobate merchant sailors. It's the journey of a mischievous teenage boy who meets his match, and yet rises to the challenge. It's the journey from boyhood to manhood. I should perhaps add that it includes swearing and some sexually explicit accounts, although nothing gratuitous as might be found in a steamy novel - it's simply what happened. In fact the only thing gratuitous is the humour and you will probably be laughing too much to notice anything else.

It is a fantastic story, expertly told, and I found myself wishing I had been the author - and yet so glad I wasn't. I went through all his adventures with him. The endless hours scrubbing the cavernous, sweltering tanks used to transport hot coconut oil, the lucky & unlucky moments with women at various ports. I cowered with him as he hid from the Mate beneath the spare propeller. I nervously stood by him as he pledged his allegiance to Neptune, and was pleased to boycott with him the dance of the penguins. I can honestly say that there is not a dull sentence in the entire book.

Absolutely and literally fantastic!
