5.0 out of 5 stars Now THIS is a special travel book..., 6 Jun 2003
By Katy Rutherford (Aberdeen, Scotland) - See all my reviews
We all think of ourselves as travellers, but these guys are real adventurers of the old school; putting their lives at risk and testing themselves to the utmost limit until you can't bear it.

This book does what a good book should do: it takes you somewhere special and gives you an amazing experience as if you are there yourself. Great writing, great relationship drama, great adventure - it has the lot.

Reading this book will give you a real lift. It will make you want to get out there and do something special with your life!

Any criticism? Well, it was a shame it had to end. I loved this book and cannot rate it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make one New Year's resolution....read this book..., 8 Jan 2002
By A Customer
"Off the Map" is what it promises to be, an honest and compelling account of a journey that tests a couple and their relationship to the limits.

This book is a frank account of a couple who follow the footsteps of a young French explorer Raymond Maufrais into a remote region of Amazonia. Canoeing up tributaries, hacking paths through the rainforest, carrying heavy loads across hill ranges, they attempt to cross the watershed from one river basin to another; a journey that Maufrais failed to complete. What will make them any different?

The book is written in such a way you feel like you are there, in the jungle experiencing the frustrations and successes that John and Heather encounter on a daily basis. You start to worry for them. Was it wise to leave all form of communication with the outside world behind? Are they physically capable of the demands placed upon them? The sheer monotony of carrying canoe and packs over innumerable obstacles - are they reckless, irresponsible or both?

Thankfully for us the readers, they accomplish their goal and leave us feeling that their acheivement was never really in any doubt.....

I have read a variety of explorer accounts from the Antartic wastes to Himalayan conquests - all inspirational epic tales of courage in their own right - but this book left me feeling overawed by the Harrison's acheivement, unaided and completely "Off the Map".

2.0 out of 5 stars Off track!, 4 May 2003
By Sofia Mooney (Portugal) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Although clad in environmentally-friendly comments and interesting facts about wildlife, the author and his wife end up doing precisely the opposite. Travelling to one of the most pristine and beautiful parts of our planet to get away from it all, to get back to Nature, hopping around naked like Adam and Eve, they end up doing exactly the opposite of what they preach. They leave the Amazonian rainforest scarred with more than twenty-five miles of trail, having hacked down many trees, killing animals and littering the place. Sure, they feel guilty every time. But just imagine what would happen if every other holidaymaker decided to have such an adventure...
