5.0 out of 5 stars A travel book with a purpose, 24 Nov 1999
By A Customer
From the very first chapter, complete with poisonous mussels and vomit-inducing mustard drinks, to the triumphant finale on the banks of Lake Titicaca, this book kept me hooked. Being free from the usual drug-induced ramblings of much South American travel-writing, I couldn't help but be over-awed by the trio's achievement, and their dedication to the cause of the Leukaemia Research Fund. The large doses of both self-deprecating humour and social realism make it an entertaining and informative read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining life-changing odyssey, 11 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Even in an age when sponsored walks and charity concerns are, if not commonplace then fairly frequent occurrences, this outstanding tale inspires in the most entertaining way. It tells how three men approaching the end of their twenties felt motivated, for various reasons, to undertake a mammoth bicycle journey along the unforgiving Andes from Patagonia to lake titicaca in aid of the Leukaemia Research Fund. In spite of getting off to an unpromising start with a potentially lethal dose of food poisoning, they achieved their goal, learning much about themselves and the land and the people they encountered. Although the author describes himself as not a natural writer, he has captured the real spirit of their quest, combining accounts of the emotional and physical highs and lows with descriptions of places and peoples, readily admitting that if it were not for the Leukaemia Research Fund they might not have completed the jopurney. It is interesting to note that tales of their human encounters have retained such impotance in Attlee's account of the journey: when reading the epilogue, which features brief interviews with the trio five years on, it is evident that their prospective of life and priorities have changed to those less concerned with thew material. My sole criticism is aimed at the subtitle: The Trail to Titicaca is not simply "a journey through South Americ" but a life-changing odyssey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best travel book ever., 1 Jul 2007
By Mr. Paul M. James "DVDMAN" (Huddersfield) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I first read this book in early 2004 just a few months before I went travelling for the first time. It rare for me to read a book that lasts so long in the memory, I love reading travel books but this one is different, its funny, well written, caring and shows both sides of travel not just the glamourous side.
Everyone I travelled with I made read it and not one person had a bad comment to make about it. Whether your a big fan of South America or not just so long as you have even a small interest in travel and other countries you should read this book.
Amazing, buy it NOW!!!! You won`t regret it.
