4.0 out of 5 stars Ace, 28 Nov 2004

This truly is one of the best Batman graphic novels out there and would recommend it on the strengths of both story and art. This is excellent for newcomers to the Bat-verse as you don't need an in depth knowledge of every DC comic characters storylines for the past 15 years as is becoming commonplace.
Instant recommendation.

4.0 out of 5 stars the best yet - excellent direction, 20 Jul 2006

If, like me, you liked the first book (in the line of duty) but didn't like the second (half a life) then fear not. This installment firmly plants GOTHAM CENTRAL back on the right track - dark and gritty. The first story of this book (about half of it) is reason to buy it alone - it's that good. There's a sniper taking out high profile targets across gotham. The police are scared, fearful for their lives and how the media percieve them during a critical time of budget cuts and corruption. Many of the characters don't like the batman because he steals all the glory while cops die investigating. At the same time they hope he will interviene before more die neadlessly - essential buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Confused, but strangely satisfied, 29 Jun 2005
An excellent story - I just wish I was able to re-arranged the pages into chronological order!
Rucka is a favorite author of mine - both prose and graphic novels - so I was drawn to this book with hightened anticipation. He captures Batman's inner demons and driving passions much better than other Batman writers as the tale unfolds. The frustration of flashbacks that were not clearly signposted made me work harder than I would have liked. That aside - this is a good read.
