4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 17 Jan 2006
I'm not a great fan of the man of steel, but Millar is always worth reading so I gave Red Son a spin. This is really assured story-telling, really confident. Millar hardly puts a foot wrong considering this is a potentially tricky storyline. The conclusion is one of the most satisfying pay-offs I've read in a long time. I strongly recommend this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb., 4 Feb 2009
I bought this on a whim after reading a short review that basically said: A Superman story that's actually good!

The story is based on one premise, and it's an extremely clever one with incredible cosequences: What if Superman had landed on Earth 12 hours earlier? ...and then been brought up as a good communist at the height of the cold war to become Mother Russias ultimate weapon/deterrant.

America is left with the cleverest man on Earth to find a solution: Lex Luthor.
Along the way we see the Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and a Russian Batman all try and 'stop' Superman from what seems at first an ideal way of leadership.
Enough said, if you have'nt read this I dont want to spoil it for you.

It's definatley one of the most clever stories I've read in a while with extremely well thought out issues. What could have been a boring political book is nothing but entertaining and a real page turner. And the ending...? One of the most jaw dropping that you'll remeber for a long long time.

Mark Miller is writer, Dave Johnson and Kilian Plunkett on artwork duties.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ambiguity rules, 22 Nov 2007
By Mr. N. M. Wordsworth (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Another alternate Superman, this time in an alternate history... Landing 12 hours early, the rocketed alien(?) infant is found and raised in Ukraine instead of Kansas. Growing up to be the Comrade of Steel (successor to Stalin, both in title and in position as Soviet Premier), he upholds the communist philosphy of absolute state control, seeking to create a global utopia with no crime, no poverty, no hunger, no unemployment - and no choice. His noble intentions shine through as always, whatever the outcome.

Why Batman and Wonder Woman also had to be emerge in Russia (whilst Lex Luthor, Lois Lane and Hal Jordan remain Americans) is never quite justified... but it makes for a fascinating story. Casting Batman as terrorist instead of crimefighter may be actually more suited to his forbidding image, although he is still a hero and an inspiration in his setting. Luthor, a misanthropic and selfish genius, departs from his usual villainy, yet remains Superman's nemesis as always - representing the Land of the Free, later becoming President and saving America from economic collapse, ultimately the creator of an Earthly paradise. The twist at the end, although corny, completes the inversion of the classic Superman concept.

The defining characteristic of this graphic novel is that one can never define who is hero and who is villain.
