5.0 out of 5 stars A gothic crossover masterpiece., 10 Nov 2003
By Ian Tapley "thefragrantwookiee" - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
THE STORY:
In 1927 a scientist discovers an Alien hive in Alaska and returns to Gotham with several samples, sealing himself in his underground laboratory. In the present day the lab is opened and the Aliens are unleashed on the city with only Batman standing in the way of total infestation. However, the more dangerous threat is a military scientist who has sinister plans for the Aliens and the inhabitants of Arkham Asylum.

WHAT'S GOOD:
Batman's gothic nature is ideally suited to an Aliens crossover and the creatures don't disappoint either, being scary, brutal and fascinating. The secondary story about Dr. Fortune is an interesting idea; a team of Alien-hybrid supervillains tasked with policing superheroes. The single greatest moment of this graphic novel is the Killer Croc alien, which is so cool that I can't find words for it.

WHAT'S BAD:
Whilst an interesting idea, the supervillain-alien hybrids aren't a perfect idea and there are some holes in the story's logic that you could fly the space tug Nostromo through. One other gripe I have is that I was disappointed about the Arkham scene. I had such lovely visions of the Joker laughing in the face of the xenomorphs but instead we only get a brief confrontation between Two-Face and an Alien and a mere cameo by the Joker.

A very good read, but the Batman-Predator crossovers are better.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent crossover., 10 Oct 2003
By Ian Tapley "thefragrantwookiee" - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
THE STORY:
An alien hive was uncovered in Alaska in the 20s, but it's deadly plunder remains hidden beneath Gotham until the present day. The xenomorphs are set loose by a building crew and Batman must prevent them from destroying the city. However, the military scientist Doctor Fortune has another agenda and an astonishing link to the creatures.

WHAT'S GOOD:
The art in this graphic novel is excellent, combining thrilling dynamic sequences with the dark gothic nature of both it's title bearers. The story is compelling, and I found my pulse racing when the aliens break into Arkham. Also, I was stunned by how cool the Killer Croc/alien hybrid looked. Top notch.

WHAT'S BAD:
Fortune's hybrids stretched my willing-suspension-of-disbelief a bit, although they're cool, it seems a pretty stupid way of making an anti-superhero army. Unfortunately, this story lacks the atmosphere of the first Batman/Aliens crossover and comes nowhere close to matching the awesome 'Batman vs Predator', but that said, it's a marked improvement over Superman's encounters with the Xenomorphs.

Worth a read by fans of either series (or if you're like me, fans of crossovers).
