Product Description

Review

BBC Cult, review by Nev Fountain, 14 December 2004: " Dan Dare is the quintessence of future nostalgia. It's a wonderfully exciting collection of stories, escapism for boys in short trousers stuffed full of catapults and cigarette cards."; Go! Essex Chronicle: " A classic '50s adventure series, beautfully illustrated by Frank Hampson..."

Comic World News February 4th 2005

"...classic stories beautifully drawn by a team of dedicated artists headed by Hampson."

5.0 out of 5 stars Roddenberry's inspiration?, 21 Sep 2006
Superb story lines, and amazing art work. Takes me back to my youth. Have any other readers noticed the reference to engines as 'nacelles' in one of the episodes? It cannot be a coincidence that Gene Roddenberry used the same name for his warp drives in Star Trek. The 'telesenders' in 'Voyage to Venus' are also Roddenberry's transporters. It's a pity he didn't come clean and give Frank Hampson the credit where it was due. And the reference to bees/locusts in 'Red Moon' may have been the inspiration for 'Quatermass and the Pit'. Frank Hampson was a genius, and well before his time.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN International Art Treasure!, 16 Sep 2005
By D. Finlay (Northern Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I cannot recomend this book enough.
I have been buying the Dan Dare series which are beign reprinted chronologically by Titan books. I have so enjoyed them and of learning more of 'The Eagle' the original comic from which Dan Dare came from and how the stories are so good. Every reprint book tells of the history of how the strip was created and is very interesting.
A whole team of artists and writer contributed to Dan Dare. Models where made of spaceships, space launching pads, spacestations etc.
People even modeled for the characters and clay models where made for the aliens.
That is why the art work and stories are so good.
This was totaly unique for its day and even now. As it was then and would be now very expensive to do.
Just read it and see the quality stand strong.
But the best thing about it is the whole optimistic ethos of the worlds created in Dan Dare which is sadly missing from todays cynical untrusting world.
May this strip inspire a whole new genre in Sci fi writing.
