Product Description

Product Description
Continuing Titan's bestselling Transformers collections, this never-before-collected reprint of the extremely hard-to-find Transformers UK comic material collects the Space Pirates storyline, which relates directly to the events of the DVD smash-hit Transformers: The Movie! When a space-time rift materialises near the Quintesson homeworld, the merciless warriors set off to establish a new home planet - and their target is Cybertron! Cunningly manipulating the Autobots and Decepticons into battle and intending to pick off the survivors, the Quintessons in fact unite the old enemies...and then it's classic, all-out action all the way, especially when Rodimus Prime, Metroplex and Ultra Magnus join the fray!

About the Author
Simon Furman has written extensively for both comics and TV animation, including Alpha Flight, Death's Head, Beast Wars and X-Men: Evolution. He is currently enjoying enormous success with his new Transformers series, 'The War Within', and online comic The Engine. Fan-favourite artist Lee Sullivan has illustrated Thunderbirds, Doctor Who, Thundercats and Action Man as well as Transformers.

4.0 out of 5 stars The stormclouds gather..., 22 Jan 2004
By Mr. J. R. Coupland (Somewhere on Earth) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Whenever the UK Transformers comic didn't have to print the US strips, writer Simon Furman usually enjoyed to continue his ongoing storyline involving the consequences of Galvatron's trip to 1980s Earth. 'Space Pirates' formed the fourth major UK story in the series, following 'Target: 2006', 'Fallen Angel' and 'The Legacy of Unicron', and by this point the consequences of messing about in time are being felt.

By none more so than the Quintessons, making their UK comic debut. Simon Furman used the US adaptation of 'The Big Broadcast of 2006' (thankfully only summarised here as it's pretty awful and will no doubt appear in a US collection soon) as a springboard to launch a story of the Quintessons' homeworld under threat from a rift in the time/space continuum, which has developed through future characters interfering with events in the past. The Quintessons need a new home and Cybertron is in their sights...

'Space Pirates' isn't the pinnacle of the storyline but it is a fun read with some great moments - Autobot corpses strung up outside their Earth base, the unveiling of Metroplex, Rodimus Prime's return to his (much more likeable) Hot Rod persona. Simon Furman, needless to say, writes brilliantly throughout, climaxing each chapter with a cliffhanger which ensures you read on. The artwork is generally great (although Dougie Braithwaite's images of Rodimus Prime in part 3 aren't quite to my tastes) but, as with other volumes, collecting the chapters together in one volume can make the differing styles more obvious.

The collection also features 'Salvage' and 'Wreaking Havoc', 1980s set stories which move events onwards towards their climax in 'Time Wars'. 'Salvage' is notable in that it begins in England and features a guest appearance by a certain real life businessman... And, once 'Space Pirates' concludes, the book showcases 'Ark Duty', a brief, enjoyable story set before the Movie (in 2003... last year?!) showing construction commence on the Autobots' Earth city.

Oh, and how does Wreak-Gar's moustache remain alight throughout the entireity of 'Space Pirates'? I've never worked that one out...

3.0 out of 5 stars Attack of the Merciless Monologue, 19 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Famous (to me anyway) for being the saga in which, when it reached part 2, Marvel UK sacked the comic's designer and replaced them with a one-armed 4 year old with a dodgy ruler and some rubbish crayons (readers of the title will know what I mean). This story starts well and ends well, sags in the middle, and has artwork that ranges from terrible (Braithwaite) to sublime (Sullivan) to sublimely terrible (Reed, brilliant as ever). The Quintessons are simply fantastic villains, and the story could only really have been improved by less internal monologue-ing and more mass mecha-slaughter.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Quints make their UK debut, 17 Feb 2004
The fans who enjoyed previous Movie-related shenanigans would love this. Here the Quints, who in the Movie were reduced to morons playing mock trial on their own planet, come off as genuine world-conquering badasses, taking on the Transformers on two fronts. Metroplex gets a look in, and in general it's a great piece of work. Only Time Wars may be better.
