The stormclouds gather..., 22 Jan 2004
Whenever the UK Transformers comic didn't have to print the US strips, writer Simon Furman usually enjoyed to continue his ongoing storyline involving the consequences of Galvatron's trip to 1980s Earth. 'Space Pirates' formed the fourth major UK story in the series, following 'Target: 2006', 'Fallen Angel' and 'The Legacy of Unicron', and by this point the consequences of messing about in time are being felt.By none more so than the Quintessons, making their UK comic debut. Simon Furman used the US adaptation of 'The Big Broadcast of 2006' (thankfully only summarised here as it's pretty awful and will no doubt appear in a US collection soon) as a springboard to launch a story of the Quintessons' homeworld under threat from a rift in the time/space continuum, which has developed through future characters interfering with events in the past. The Quintessons need a new home and Cybertron is in their sights... 'Space Pirates' isn't the pinnacle of the storyline but it is a fun read with some great moments - Autobot corpses strung up outside their Earth base, the unveiling of Metroplex, Rodimus Prime's return to his (much more likeable) Hot Rod persona. Simon Furman, needless to say, writes brilliantly throughout, climaxing each chapter with a cliffhanger which ensures you read on. The artwork is generally great (although Dougie Braithwaite's images of Rodimus Prime in part 3 aren't quite to my tastes) but, as with other volumes, collecting the chapters together in one volume can make the differing styles more obvious. The collection also features 'Salvage' and 'Wreaking Havoc', 1980s set stories which move events onwards towards their climax in 'Time Wars'. 'Salvage' is notable in that it begins in England and features a guest appearance by a certain real life businessman... And, once 'Space Pirates' concludes, the book showcases 'Ark Duty', a brief, enjoyable story set before the Movie (in 2003... last year?!) showing construction commence on the Autobots' Earth city. Oh, and how does Wreak-Gar's moustache remain alight throughout the entireity of 'Space Pirates'? I've never worked that one out...
