Product Description

Product Description
In Mega-City One, the Judges are the law - acting as judge, jury, and often executioner. But how do the citizens of Mega-City One really feel about a system where they are powerless? This classic, chilling look at the impact of the Judges, twisting and turning through both warm passion and cold betrayal, is finally back in print - and now includes the never-before-reprinted return to America's story! America Jara and Bennett Beeny grow up as best friends, living a fairly trouble-free life in a dangerous city...bar the odd encounter with a Judge. Time draws them apart, and when they are brought back together, Beeny is a successful singer...and America has become involved with a terrorist organisation - with the Judges in its sights!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dredd From A Non-Judge Perspective, 18 Jun 2003
By Z. J. Robinson (Bolton, Lancashire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
While most Dredd stories focus on the Judges and Dredd in particular, telling the story from their point of view, that the Law is always right, 'America' (the first Dredd story in 2000AD's spin-off comic, 'The Judge Dredd Megazine', establishing the spin-off as far more mature than its forebearer) tells the story from the point of view of the citizens and this alone makes it a worthwhile read.

However, that's not the only interesting part of this story, which opens with Dredd's chilling yet also rather understandable monologue, in which he eulogises about rights, freedom and the Law's place in society, presenting him as a fully rounded character who deeply believes in what he's doing and is prepared to back up his beliefs with reasoned arguments. The story then goes on to show how, despite their best efforts, the Judges can't win out their battle against humanity's base needs to be free and unrestrained from responsibility.

Put simply, this is Dredd at his best, written and drawn by the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best, 17 Aug 2003
By Alex Ryder (Blighty) - See all my reviews
I have read nearly all the Dredd books and i have to say this one rates as one of the best. I have never seen a dredd story which focuses more on the citizens than the Justice Dept. It is a real eye opener as to how the state oppresses it's citizens, and why they fight and die for a taste of democracy. A great story through out well recomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars All-time best Judge Dredd Story, 1 Aug 2003

A great story - encapsulates the experience of living in Mega-City One with the Judges watching your every move. What can one person do to protest under these circumstances?

Excellent painted art by Colin MacNeil complements it perfectly. The writer of this story and creator of Judge Dredd, John Wagner recently professed that America is his favourite ever Judge Dredd story and can't say I disagree with him - buy now!
