The dark side is rising. Will the Jedi fight, fall or turn?, 9 Feb 2003
This is penultimate chapter in the intriguing story of the amnesiac Jedi Quinlan Vos. Quinlan's charm to readers is that he is not the openly evil type of character we see in Darths Maul and Vader but he is also not the rule-abiding (somewhat boring) philosopher that many of the Jedi are. He is a grey area, as reflected in the title of his first story, the excellent graphic novel 'Twilight'. 'Darkness' sees Quinlan being forced to face the past he has forgotten on the sisterworld to his home planet. In the course of his adventures he discovers (and relives!) the horrific way in which his parents died, he is also confronted by his former Master, Tholme, with a great deal of friction and finally he catches up to his own lost apprentice, Aayla Secura. But Aayla is now the apprentice of the long-dormant Dark Jedi Volfe Karkko.Written by John Ostrander, the story brings Quinlan's life to it darkest point, a junction where he must choose between the easy path or the path of the Jedi. It is an inventive and brilliantly scripted (and illustrated) way of highlighting the fragility of Quinlan's mind. It goes without saying that Quinlan Vos is the most appealing and truly human of any of the prequel era's Jedi and I sincerely hope we see more of him in other mediums (solo novel please Lucasfilm). Plus, it's always good to encounter new Dark Jedi like Karkko and learn how they fell from grace themselves (I won't give too much away, but his involves sucking people's brains out). For action fans, there are plenty of blasters and lightsabers to be seen and even a dark side duel that ends in a Japanese-anime style dismemberment (you'll understand when you see it!). And remember not to be fooled by the 'Star Wars' logo, this is a story that is very adult in it's horrific and dark nature. Kids will probably still like it, but be assured that this isn't Superman and his shiny world of spandex suits, this is 'Darkness', Star Wars style. Fans of the Star Wars Universe will be interested to learn that Quinlan's apprentice Aayla, was spotten on one of the comic covers by George Lucas and he promptly had her added to 'Attack Of The Clones', so watch out for her in the big arena battle! Verdict: Five stars - I can't recommend this enough, and if you want the full story of Quinlan and Aayla, check out the 'Twilight' graphic novel and the 'Republic: Rite Of Passage' comic book series.
