Product Description

Synopsis
Despite his successful record in previous missions, the Jedi Council still feels that Quinlan Vos, a troubled Jedi struggling to regain stability after having his memory erased, still walks dangerously close to the Dark Side. But when a prison planet under watch by the Guardians is attacked by an unidentified - yet all too close-to-home - enemy, Quinlan Vos is specifically requested to investigate, thanks to his Guardian ancestry. Fully recovered or not, it looks like Quin's off on another suicide mission - but is his task what it seems?

5.0 out of 5 stars The dark side is rising. Will the Jedi fight, fall or turn?, 9 Feb 2003
By Ian Tapley "thefragrantwookiee" - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is penultimate chapter in the intriguing story of the amnesiac Jedi Quinlan Vos. Quinlan's charm to readers is that he is not the openly evil type of character we see in Darths Maul and Vader but he is also not the rule-abiding (somewhat boring) philosopher that many of the Jedi are. He is a grey area, as reflected in the title of his first story, the excellent graphic novel 'Twilight'. 'Darkness' sees Quinlan being forced to face the past he has forgotten on the sisterworld to his home planet. In the course of his adventures he discovers (and relives!) the horrific way in which his parents died, he is also confronted by his former Master, Tholme, with a great deal of friction and finally he catches up to his own lost apprentice, Aayla Secura. But Aayla is now the apprentice of the long-dormant Dark Jedi Volfe Karkko.

Written by John Ostrander, the story brings Quinlan's life to it darkest point, a junction where he must choose between the easy path or the path of the Jedi. It is an inventive and brilliantly scripted (and illustrated) way of highlighting the fragility of Quinlan's mind. It goes without saying that Quinlan Vos is the most appealing and truly human of any of the prequel era's Jedi and I sincerely hope we see more of him in other mediums (solo novel please Lucasfilm).
Plus, it's always good to encounter new Dark Jedi like Karkko and learn how they fell from grace themselves (I won't give too much away, but his involves sucking people's brains out).

For action fans, there are plenty of blasters and lightsabers to be seen and even a dark side duel that ends in a Japanese-anime style dismemberment (you'll understand when you see it!). And remember not to be fooled by the 'Star Wars' logo, this is a story that is very adult in it's horrific and dark nature. Kids will probably still like it, but be assured that this isn't Superman and his shiny world of spandex suits, this is 'Darkness', Star Wars style.

Fans of the Star Wars Universe will be interested to learn that Quinlan's apprentice Aayla, was spotten on one of the comic covers by George Lucas and he promptly had her added to 'Attack Of The Clones', so watch out for her in the big arena battle!

Verdict: Five stars - I can't recommend this enough, and if you want the full story of Quinlan and Aayla, check out the 'Twilight' graphic novel and the 'Republic: Rite Of Passage' comic book series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware the dark side, 15 Feb 2003
A word of caution. If you were to buy this. you should really read the novel before this (Twilight) first, as the story contains numerous references to that story and you'll find yourself almost lost.
Assuming you have read the first one, the plot is Jedi Master Quinlan Vos has regained his memory and is sent on a crucial mission to his homeland to rebuild relations between the Jedi and his people and to find his former pupil.
Unfortunately, his renegade padawan is also on this planet and uncovers the entrapped body of an evil Jedi warrior, after unleashing him, she is consunmed by her hatred of her former master, and sets out with an army of deadly beasts to destroy him.
Vos however is a tormented soul, tetering on the brink of the Dark Side, so much so that the Jedi Council despatch Vos' former tutor to guide him in his mission.
But as his former mentor tries to steer him back to the path of light, the Dark Jedi sends his former student to lure Vos to him and make him an agent of the Dark Side also.
It is an intriguing story, well drawn and written, with some familiar faces on view.
The only problem I find, is the appearance of annoying sub-character, Villi, who is almost as annoying as Jar-Jar Binks, with some silly dialogue, he just isn't needed in a story like this.
