It's Star Wars Jim, but not as we know it....., 3 Jan 2004
These are collections of the Marvel comics published in the late 70's and early 80's - bought I guess by many of us who remember the originals. It took me a while to figure out what was where. Vol. 1 contains the adaptation of the original New Hope movie followed by some 'Magnificent Seven ' style adventure involving Han, Chewie and a giant rabbit and then there's a Luke Skywalker 'Waterworld' style adventure. This volume picks up after that and contains all new stories, which lead up to the adaptation of the high point of the whole series - 'Empire Strikes Back'- in the first part of volume 3. So, I got this one 'cos it's all 'new' stuff, without any movie adaptation material. The guys who produced it didn't do too badly, considering it was written over 25 years ago, with only the first movie to go on - so, no Yoda, no Boba Fett (but then, on the plus side, no Jar-Jar Binks either). Instead we get a distinctly different visualisation of the , as then unseen, 'Jabba the Hut' (sic), a Darth Vader, who doesn't even know Luke's name and , of course, no hint of what was to come to come at the end of 'Empire'. We also get a valiant attempt to create a varied range of lightsabre wielding villians (presumably so as not to overuse the Dark Lord himself). So, are these books worth having, except as a nostalgia trip for guys like me, currently kicking themselves for not keeping the original editions ? Well, Infantino's art is endearing, but hardly photo-realistic, with some distinctly odd renditions of Luke, Han and the rest of the crew. Also, the dialogue is terrible - especially the attempts to convey Solo's cocky wisecracks. But the stories are an interesting attempt to spin further tales out of the original movie, and let's face it, the movie franchise runs out of steam half hour into 'Jedi' anyway, so they hardly have a lot to live up to. If you want adaptations of the movies, see if you can get the recent 'manga-style' ones. If you want glorious art, go for some of the more modern Star Wars comic books. But, if you want a big, solid, lump of nostalgia to keep you quiet for a few hours, this is probably the series for you.
