Product Description

Product Description
The hit animated TV shows Beast Wars and Beast Machines introduced a whole new generation to the 'robots in disguise' and now, at last, the stories that came before those shows can be seen again in their world-shaking glory. The death of a hero...the return of an old foe...and the awakening of the gods! When Ratchet, Autobot chief medic, is kidnapped, a desolate Optimus Prime must find it within himself to continue the eternal battle against the Decepticons. Meanwhile, some old friends have returned to the fray...and so has an old, old enemy! And unbeknownst to all of them, their battles have woken Primus - creator of the Transformers. Unfortunately, Primus' scream upon waking has awoken an enemy from before time - an enemy who will not rest until all are destroyed - Unicron!

About the Author
Simon Furman has written for both comics and TV animation, including Alpha Flight, Death's Head, Beast Wars, X-Men: Evolution and The Roswell Conspiracies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite frankly: Brilliant!, 7 April 2002
By A Customer
This book is set before 'End of the Road' and 'All falll down'. It is a story of Ratchets anguish of not being able to repair his fellow comrades. It tells of how Megatron is not dead, and welcomes the return and debute of Starscream, Jazz, Bumblebee, and Grimlock as Classic Pretenders. The story is just FANTASTIC, Simon Furman at his best. It is a must for any TF fan or collector as myself.

3.0 out of 5 stars A New Beginning, 19 April 2002
By A. Whitehead "Werthead" (Colchester, Essex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
When Simon Furman started writing for the American Transformers comic in 1989 he brought with him five years' experience on the British comic, with its more mature storylines and innovative ideas. So as perhaps not to stun the US readers too much (who were used to frankly mediocre stories up until this point), he starts off with an apparently self-contained story which sees Autobot medic Ratchet kidnapped by a familiar enemy to put in motion an insidious scheme to upset the Autobot-Decepticon balance of power on Earth. After that four-issue story is completed, the plot expands to incorporate the genesis of the Transformers race and the revelation that their arch-nemesis Unicron is now spoiling for their blood. The writing is reasonable in this story, but only picks up towards the end as Furman feels more comfortable with the US-length comics (which were twice the length of the UK ones) and more confident that the readers are following his more serialised, in-depth storyline. Unfortunately, the art lets the book down. Jose Delbo was okay for his time, but seems rather poor by today's standards. Geoff Senior is rather superior, but is not served well by the reproduction here in the graphic novel format. Andy Wildman's work in All Fall Down and End of the Road is vastly superior. Titan could also have released the books in order: anyone and everyone reading this will already have read the previous two volumes and know how the story ends. Nevertheless, this is a surprisingly rewarding read, a foretaste of the even higher standards ahead in Matrix Quest.

5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of greatness, 24 Sep 2002
This book took me back to when I originally read the sories at the age of 9. At a rate of only a few pages a week in the UK comic it took time to see the whole picture, but collected together I could now read the whole lot in one go.

Simon Furman had long held a strong reputation in the UK for the complexity of his Transformers stories but his start on the US comic allowed him to create a truly awesome epic. This is a tale of hope and despair, of deceptions and revelations and it is all the better for it. Wisely he doesn't focus upon the Transformers' ability to change shape (by my reckoning in the first four issue there are only six characters who ever transform, all in the heat of action) but instead upon their personalities and origins. Jose Delbo's art is reasonable, but Geoff Senior's is truly out of this world and his contributions here alone could easily qualify him as the greatest TF artist of all time.

It was a tragedy that when these stories were originally printed interest in the TFs was waning and sales on the comic fell, with the result that many fans never got to read these stories. This trade paperback and its fellows goes a long way towards rectifying that state and I hope many more are released.

Simon Furman's first seven US stories, and to begin with he seems to be finding his feet, making the transition from Bob Budianski's far fetched (and occasionally, frankly daft)... Read more
