Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
While Kurt Busiek leads the reconstruction of the superhero myth with the brilliant Astro City, Alan Moore continues to be the master of reinvention, now demonstrated with prolific regularity with his America's Best Comics imprint. Following Tom Strong and Promethea, Top Ten proves to be a third home run in a row for the Watchmen maestro. However, it's clear that Moore is now in the mood for having fun with superheroes, rather than grimly deconstructing them. Armed with a fantastic premise--the work of a police precinct in a city populated exclusively by "science-heroes"--Top Ten is vintage Moore: captivating, slyly witty and immaculately structured. More than that, it's a damn good read. Cunningly non-epic, Moore draws us into the daily lives of the put-upon powered cops as they deal with a city where the criminal element could well be from a broken dimension rather than a broken home. Top Ten's cops are a wonderfully eclectic bunch: Sergeant Kemlo Caesar (an intelligent rottweiller in a humanoid exoskeleton), Jeff Smax, a blue-skinned giant; Irma Geddon, a walking weapon; Girl One, naked except for ever-shifting body paint; and Dust Devil, an urban cowboy. From such richly developed characters, Top Ten is infused with sparkling interplay and a strong sense of a tight community. True as it is, it would be insufficient to label this "a super-NYPD Blue", when it is yet another terrific example of Moore's uncanny ability to make myths so effortlessly malleable, moulding fresh perspectives that are respectful to and lined with the treasures of a rich past. --Danny Graydon --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from the best writer in comics, 7 Mar 2001

Alan Moore has done it again! From early days on 2000 AD he's beeen a master at creating belivable worlds, all with their own internal logic. Whether humourous ('D.R. & Quinch') or dramatic ('The Ballad Of Halo Jones') all display their own perfect ever-so-slightly off kilter symetry, and all are totally believable.

'Top 10' continues that tradition. Based around the Precinct 10 police division in Neopolis, an alternate Earth reality where superheroes came into being during WW2 to fight the Axis, and then never went back in the phone booth, Moore has created an intricate society.

The precint is workplace for a collection of extraordinary cops. Armoured she-mountain Irma Geddon, Combined doberman/robot Kemlo Ceasar, and indistructable big blue guy Jeff Smax are just part of the Hill Street Blues with super powers cast, all stunningly rendered in full colour by Gene Ha and Zander Cannon.

From the billboards advertising 'Limbs Surgically Implanted - One Hour' to the bar full of drunken Norse gods, the whole story is beautifully textured, with all the space on each page full of detail, making the book a pleasure to read.

My word, Alan certainly does write a fine yarn doesn't he? not content to shake us all up with watchmen and V for Vendetta all those years ago he now decides to thrill us once more with this really odd yet compelling story about a ....well hang on, my words can do no justice. read the thing yerself. And the illustrations are nice too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful wit, ideas and pace., 25 Jul 2002

This is easily the best creation since "Watchmen". Whilst the story is strong, and the broad swep impressive, it is the character touches which make it genius; The lawyers who are real sharks, the blind zen cabbie, the beggar who is "a victim of the 92 circualtion wars". All superbly done.
