Product Description

Synopsis
It's THE Star Wars event of the year! Luke Skywalker and the Emperor's former assassin Mara Jade are set to tie the knot in a union that will forever re-shape the New Republic. Once they were blood enemies: she sworn to kill him at all costs. But adversity makes strange bedfellows, in this case quite literally, and now Luke and Mara prepare to usher in a new dawn of galatic peace as husband and wife. But this union is not universally popular, and many supporters of the fallen Emperor see it as the ultimate betrayal. In fact, one group of outlaw Imperials have made it their sacred duty to see that the wedding cermony...becomes a funeral pyre! Don't miss this hugely pivotal chapter in the ever-expanding Star Wars saga!

4.0 out of 5 stars Luke finds himself a woman who doesn't die or disappear!, 24 Nov 2004

THE STORY:
Sixteen years after 'Return of the Jedi', Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade are planning to get married. A group of Imperial radicals infiltrates Coruscant with plans to destroy this symbolic union of Rebel and Imperial.

WHAT'S GOOD:
This book is the biggest cameo-fest made by Star Wars ever with familiar faces from right across the saga. It also updates the stories of many of those characters (mostly in terms of 'who's married who' ie. Kam Solusar and Tionne, Winter and Tycho Celchu, Wedge and Iella Wessiri). Robert Teranishi's arwork is amazingly detailed and, for the first time in a Star Wars comic, the characters from the films actually look like the actors who played them (I was particularly impressed by his Wedge Antilles/Denis Lawson). There's also plenty of humour to keep things light too, such as a designer cheekily suggesting Mara should get married in a bikini and thong!

WHAT'S BAD:
Frankly, there's just not much of a story here. The Imperials trying to spoil the wedding are such a pathetic bunch that at no point do they give the book a sense of threat or urgency and the ease with which talks the leader around at the end is just ridiculous. Another thing that bothered me is the flip-side of Teranishi's spot on depiction of the movie actors: he seems to have used other famous faces as the basis for the EU characters (the ones that really stick out are Bruce Willis as Kam Solusar and Tommy-Lee Jones as Wes Janson). Finally, this book is, as you might expect, all romantic and mushy, which is all well and good, but I really had trouble picturing Mara as the demure bride.

5.0 out of 5 stars The event of the year!, 30 Sep 2000
The fantastic artwork throughout this book underscores the importance and majesty of the Michael Stackpole (X-Wing, Rogue Squadron series) story. It manages to combine the galaxy's feeling of the importance of the event, together with pre-event worries from Luke and Mara whilst weaving in a large element of tension in with he mundane preparations. This entire book my only be about the wedding, with a few sub-plots thrown in, but you never feel that. It kept me engrossed from the first page to the last. If you only buy one Star Wars book this year, I would recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - what more can I say!!!, 10 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This book was among the best graphic novels I have ever read (and I've read a few!). The story is riddled with carefully crafted humour - from the obvious-yet-funny gags to the subtle, blink-and-you'll-miss-them one liners. The artwork is simply and without a doubt the finest I have seen in a Star Wars graphic novel, and that just adds to the appeal of this book. The only thing to say against it is that the conclusion of the plot to spoil the wedding seems rather rushed, but the rest of the story is everything we have come to expect from Michael Stackpole (New Jedi Order series). I suppose also that the wedding itself is the main story so that is what is important! All in all, I would strongly recommend this book to anyone and everyone, even if only to look at the fantastic artwork!

4.0 out of 5 stars Shallow story line, but still great fun!
Although personally I liked the depiction of Mara better in the Comic book "Mara Jade, By the Emperor's hand", I consider this one to be okay on that score. Read more
