1.0 out of 5 stars Utterly feeble story, 10 Jun 2004
By N. D. Maidment "butchmaidment" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Interestingly, george Lucas approached Foster after he made A New Hope to ask him to come up with a story for a spossible follow up. Because Lucas didn't think he'd have a big budget for a follow up he didn't want too many lavish sets, so instructed Foster to keep things realistic. Thank goodness the film was a major success because this as a follow up would have been dreadful!
Foster decided to set the follow up on a swamp planet (to allow cheap, foggy sets should it become a film) and as such is stuck on a miserable location throughout. That would be OK if the story was any good, but this is both incredibly dull and hugely unlikely.
The plot sees Luke and Leia heading out to a backwater world to try to drum up support for the rebellion. Here they discover the existence of the Kyber Crystal, reputed to enhance force powers, and set off in search.
They get captured, vader is alerted and sets off to find them. Pretty hum-drum. Eventually they meet in the temple where the crystal is stored and battle it out, with Luke ludicrously lopping off Vader's arm and then the Dark Lord suffering the ultimate embarassment by bungling off a cliff edge!
So far-fetched as to be uterly ridiculous, we can only thank the maker that this was never a plot for a film, or Star Wars would very quickly have faded away! Not only that, it's one of those stories that has tried to be slipped into the Expanded Universe as really happening. But in my opinion, it's something that ardent fans will discount as canon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Luke and Leia treasure hunting on a swamp planet., 1 Jan 2002
By A Customer
On a rebel recruiting mission Luke and Leia crash on a mining planet and while scouting around in a small mining village they are approached by a person who tells them about a mystic gem that is hidden on the planet, one that gives the possessor a greater insight into the force. And of coure they have to find it before someone else does...

I think the story is ok but as with many of the stories that take place in the star wars universe the plot is full of strange coincidences that shouldn't have to happen in a big place like the universe, like the same peoples paths keeps crossing each others in every corner of the galaxy.

The drawing is simple and somewhat like the old star wars marvel comics back in the 80s, but it's clean and the storyline is easily followed trough the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Expanded Star Wars Universe Begins Here ..., 13 Aug 2008
By Captain EO "No. 7" (Cardiff, Wales, UK) - See all my reviews
Before I begin I should state that I'm a massive fan of the original trilogy, however my enhthusiasm of all things Star wars has dampened somewhat with not only the slightly dissapointing later films but also the overkill of Star Wars products in general. I consider Alan Dean Foster's novel "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" to be my favourite tie-in novel, largely in part that at the time, that's more or less all that us original Star Wars fans had to live-on (pre Timothy Zahn). The book was a fast-paced, tight read featuring only a handful of our heroes on a planet and in an adventure not too far removed from Episodes IV to VI.

With this is mind I really enjoyed the comic book adaptation. The graphics may look slightly dated (consider this was released PRE-Phantom Menace) & it's not a particularly hefty story but it's true to George Lucas's original saga & features characters that we all love and hasn't been set hundreds of years before or after Luke & Leia's prime.

Set this graphic novel (and indeed original novel) aside hundreds of other Star Wars stories now available and it may not be classed as well-written or drawn & inked as a number of the others. Maybe it's this that appeals to me however as it's easily one of my favourite Star Wars tie-ins out there.
