Product Description

Product Description
An incredible collection of rare and previously unseen material, which shows the true versatility of the comics creator who is credited with turning comic strip into critically-acclaimed literature. Gathered from Gaiman's long career, and with unprecedented access having been given to the DC comics archive, it includes his early work on Death, John Constantine: Hellblazer and Swamp Thing as well as an exclusive, never-before-published, Sandman story, and features a new introduction by Gaiman himself.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for Gaiman afficionados, 17 April 2001
By A Customer
This collection of one-off and early Neil Gaiman works is a must-have for the dedicated fan, but less so for the first time buyer. From his earliest scripts - Swamp Thing's 'Jack-in-the-Green' (rendered for the first time in this collection) the sparks of a major talent were always present, but their potential not fully exploited - Gaiman later returned to the central idea of 'Jack-in-the-Green' and executed it with far greater panache.

From Swamp Thing to HellBlazer, the early works all have something of the glitter and glint of Gaiman Storytelling Fairy Dust, but these are works that are of more interest to the Gaiman completist. I would recommend that newer readers look to the epic Sandman or the novels, Stardust and Neverwhere for a better idea of Gaiman at his creative peak.

The remainder of the book is concerned with the slightly over-long mid-nineties one-off Sandman Midnight Theatre, featuring the DC comics pulp Sandman and Neil Gaiman's eighties re-invention Morpheus of the Endless, with his indecision, brooding amorality and perverse nature. Another recommendation to people like me, who feel the need to own it all, but not a good introduction for the uninitiated.
