4.0 out of 5 stars A good set of '90s supers stories., 7 Aug 2001
By Tim Gray (Nottingham, UK) - See all my reviews
At the end of the previous collection, 'Rock of Ages', the Justice League was disbanded. In this one they reassemble it with an expanded line-up to prepare for a predicted vague but major threat, adding Steel, Huntress, Plastic Man, Zauriel, Oracle, Orion and Barda. Oh, and Wonder Woman is played by her mum, who looks almost exactly the same. After the team-assembly issue comes a 3-parter with Prometheus, a villain who's got all their abilities on file and has a plan to deal with each - though not quite good enough. My favourite is the 2-parter with Julian September, whose discovery of probability manipulation causes the world to start unravelling, with lots of weird plot and pseudo-science. Mystery in Space is 2 issues with the heroes spacenapped by a deranged Adam Strange and a race of telepathic slavemasters (and Superman's return to his old form). Finally, a short 2-parter with Earth's population falling asleep, an alien invasion and the Sandman. That's, oh, loads of issues.

In a sense this is a relief after the convoluted storyline of Rock of Ages, with more standard comic romps - though still with plenty of ideas, weirdness, and affectionate "Gosh!" and "Heh!" with the characters. There are 3 different writers and 3 different pencillers - some of the art strays towards cartoony, but it's all OK without being great. I guess the main plot criticism is that in each story the problems are finally solved by a person or factor outside the JLA - the main characters perform impressive feats, but those just allow the wrap-up rather than creating it.
