Product Description

Product Description

Winston Spencer Churchill was an extraordinary combination of soldier and statesman. Of aristocratic birth, he enlisted as a cavalry officer, saw action at the Battle of Omdurman and, as a civilian, reported the Boer War for the "Manchester Guardian". Captured by the Boers, he escaped dramatically, and the popular appeal of his exploits helped him into a Parliamentary seat. At the outset of World War I he became the First Lord of the Admiralty and acted as the initiator of the Antwerp and Gallipoli campaigns. These failed to bear fruit and he became a colonel in the front line on the western front. At the end of the war, his political life followed a chequered career until he received the call to become prime Minister in May 1940. In this role, many thought he proved to be the saviour of his country. Dr Henry Pelling gives a biography of the great war leader.

3.0 out of 5 stars useful to form a one sided account, 26 Feb 2002
As a student the book was exactly what I had been looking for, a book which flattered the reputation of an over-flattered man. It countered much of the criticism levelled at him by historians of recent years and is an interesting account of his achievements. However, do not read if you want a more balanced account! According to this the man made no maistakes ever!

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, 30 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Pelling gives a detailed chronological account of the life of this remarkable man. The text was found to be tiresome at times, mainly due to the extent of the attention paid to election campains and results of polls - (although one accepts this to be a large part of his life) . The narrative also seamed to be rushed towards the end - when churchill reached retirement.

Despite the few criticisms, the book kept my enthusiasm and even afforded me a tear when churhcill died.

Worth a read!

3.0 out of 5 stars Readable, informative and reasonably balanced biography, 5 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Winston Churchill (Paperback)
Pelling takes the reader from Churchill's birth through to his death in a very readable and interesting single volume. He is reasonably balanced in his description of this great statesman. Enough detail is included for the scholar wishing to gain an overview of Churchill's motivation and ideals. For those more interested in the man and his influence on history it is not comprehensive but a good taster for future stady. Prospective readers should not be put off by the unusually low price.
